Coroner – Sirens Lyrics 18 years ago
Awesome gothic imagery... I was an early Coroner fan (had RIP and their demo before Punishment for Decadence was released...), I don't remember this song. Kind of Poe-ish

Watchtower – Instruments Of Random Murder Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song! I've loved WatchTower since the mid 80's when one of my old bands, Arsenal, opened for them in Arlington, TX. Awesome band, influential to so many others - Metallica, Fates Warning, Dream Theater, etc...

Song is, of course, about the Tylenol murders...

Mercyful Fate – Evil Lyrics 18 years ago
This is the first Mercyful Fate song I ever heard. Metal Shop, 1983...

I was like, "Man that's bad ass music! But Geez, what's with the vocals? But, Man! That's some bad ass music!!!" And yeah, eventually, I bought the album, and the rest is history. I saw MF in Dallas in 1984 in support of the DBtO album, with Motorhead headlining, and Exciter were the openers... What a show! King D pointed right at me and said something unintelligible in the mic...

There are some problems with the lyrics above...

Rush – Jacob's Ladder Lyrics 18 years ago
I wrote a short paper on this song awhile back for one of my Theological classes. As a long-time Rush fan (since 1977 or '78 in my mid-teens), and having read my share of Neil's writings, band interviews, etc... thru the last three decades, I know that my interpretation is likely NOT anything like Neil would admit to.

That being said, let me say that in this song, which is one of my faves off this most excellent album, I hear a telling of the Second Coming of Christ.

What follows is NOT the paper I wrote (alas, it is on a long-dead computer...), but simply some of the ideas as they stood in my mind, in my remembrance...

1. ANGELS in Christian scriptures are often symbolized by CLOUDS.

2. "the dark and BROODING silence" (the lyrics above are WRONG) - the end times, when Jesus returns, are not necessarily a joyous time for the heart of God, because it not only involves meeting His loved ones - those who have accepted the grace of God - it ALSO involves the destruction of the wicked, which is, in Scripture, called His "strange work," and "strange act," a "consumption determined upon the whole earth." Isaiah 28:21-22

Consider: "For the day is near, the day of the LORD is near— a day of clouds, a time of doom for the nations." EZEKIEL 30:3; "In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven..." DANIEL 7:13; "a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness. Like dawn spreading across the mountains a large and mighty army comes, such as never was of old nor ever will be in ages to come." JOEL 2:2; "That day will be a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness" ZEPHANIAH 1:15; "At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory." MATTHEW 24:30...

Also there are scriptures which speak of "silence in Heaven" for a certain time period, which may theologically be speaking of the time when the Lord returns...

3.) THE LIGHT OF DAY - Jesus... Obscured by the angels (CLOUDS) that are all around Him, until He should be revealed in all His glory...

"This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels." 2 THESSALONIANS 1:7

4.) TWILIGHT PREMATURE again speaks of the darkness that accompanies the Lord's return, both figuratively, and literally (the angels/CLOUDS being such a great host as to block out the light of the natural sun)

5.) THE REVEALING - "all at once, the clouds/ANGELS are parted, light streams down in bright unbroken beams" - it will indeed be a glorious event, awesome to behold (see 2 THESS. 1:7, quoted above)

6.) Follow men's eyes... I belong to a church that has a certain emphasis on eschatology (end time events), and having studied it quite a bit myself, all the verses that speaks of Him "coming with clouds" (you can search these things using www.biblegateway.com...), I often find myself looking up on cloudy days, and thinking, "Is it today, Lord?"

Yes, this is the fabric of my dreams...

Don't go off on me, as I said, I know this is NOT Neil's view on the meaning of the song. Simply one man's interpretation... As the header asks, "WHAT DOES THIS SONG MEAN TO YOU?"

Iron Maiden – Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.) Lyrics 18 years ago
AExodus is right...

Obviously, A the G did not pave the way completely, and was not the beginning of the paving process either, but the Hellenization (spreading of Greek philosophy) of the western world thru to the Fertile Crescent DID pave the way SOMEWHAT for Christianity. The Romans afterwards also had their hand in it by the brilliant road system they created, which helped spread Christianity, plus the fact that many Roman soldiers were converted, and shared their faith wherever they went in the known world.

I agree with one who said that A the G was NOT a person to be looked up to or made a role model. Of course, how many General's are? Certainly not Custer...

Iron Maiden – To Tame A Land Lyrics 18 years ago
I saw Maiden on the Piece of Mind tour. Bruce introduced the song by saying that this was a song based on a book by Frank Herbert, and that he (Herbert) did not want them to call it "Dune," so they called it "To Tame a Land," but Bruce added, "F*ck 'im, tonight we're calling it 'Dune'!!!"

Possibly my favorite Maiden song (there's LOT'S of possibilities). The bass line is INTENSE but easy. If you need help with it, email me... I've been playing since 1982, 'Arry and Geddy Lee are my two main influences/inspirations on bass...

Iron Maiden – These Colours Don't Run Lyrics 18 years ago
One thing that bothers me... A LOT... as an aside about this album (AMOLAD) is all the freakin' repetitions in the choruses. Man, some of it gets REALLY OLD! And I'm a Maiden fan since 1982. I just don't get it! Why do they feel it necessary to keep repeating the same lines over and over and OVER and OVER...??? It does NOT raise the intensity one bit... in fact, I think it detracts from the songs, and takes away from some of the intensity/power that the songs should have...

Iron Maiden – These Colours Don't Run Lyrics 18 years ago
2nd comment says could be about professional sports... apparently has not read/listened to all the lyrics...

On other fronts: Why can't it be about Iwo Jima? Are you trying to say that Maiden never writes about American history? It's WORLD history! What do you think "...Thousand Suns" is about? We (I'm an American) dropped the bombs on Japan... Also "The Longest Day" is also largely about American military...

"These Colors (sic) Don't Run" is a saying that we in the US have had for a long time, and it may very well be where 'Arry got the idea for the title...

Iron Maiden – The Phantom of the Opera Lyrics 18 years ago
I've loved this song since first hearing it in 1982. My bands always played it back in the 80's (I'm bassist/vocalist, and a huge 'Arry fan).

I see allusions to Christianity in "don't stray from the Narrow Way," and "you're the devil...", and seeing in this song a warning that uses the STORY of Phantom of the Opera as a METAPHOR for life, and how the devil is always hiding around the corner, masked, the great deceiver...

And check the line "and you know and I know that you aint got long now to last" - think about the Biblical verse at the beginning of Number of the Beast, REVELATION 12:12 "...Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time." (KJV)

And you know what, I was not a Christian when I discovered Iron Maiden in 1982, but in the late 80's I gave my heart to Christ... As I've grown in Biblical knowledge (now actually holding a BA in Theology, having trained to be a Pastor... But becoming a Special Education teacher instead...), I've grown to see many allusions to Christian scriptures and concepts, especially in 'Arry's writings...

Iron Maiden – Murders In The Rue Morgue Lyrics 18 years ago
I always thought that Di'Anno sings "two young bitches" at the end of the song, indicating that he (the teller of the tale) may have had guilt in the matter...

Also at the end, I've always thought he says "And I've got to say I've done it before," meaning that though he doesn't think he did these murders, he knows he had killed in the past...

Iron Maiden – Die With Your Boots On Lyrics 18 years ago
TWO THINGS to consider...

"In 13 the beast is rising" could be referring to a year AND/OR referring to chapter 13 of the Book of Revelation - in Revelation Chapter 13, you find the Beast power ("the Warlord") rising!

"The ship is lost" likely does NOT refer to a literal ship, but uses a ship as a metaphor for the world as we know it.

Great song! I saw them on this tour...
