Within Temptation – Gothic Christmas Lyrics 18 years ago
Lawl. I wonder if this song kinda parodies goth in general. Like with Santa wearing a black dress instead of just a black suit, and "grunting in Latin" made me crack up because it reminds me of E Nomine in which the vocalist does grunt in Latin.

But of course kinda in a fun way : D

Within Temptation – The Cross Lyrics 18 years ago
I know this is going to sound stupid, but when I first heard this song, I imagined it was about Jesus and those who denied his faith. But even so, I always thought that that in itself was a metaphor for those that betray and leave you behind and don't have any faith in you anymore.

I once took an art history class, and it was interesting that one class the prof mentioned that there was a time in the Victorian era when artists such as Paul GGauguin painted images of the crucifix but Jesus was often painted in the likeness of the artist himself, due to feeling sacrificed, betrayed, and in need of giving themselves to a higher cause.

So this is what this song reminded me of. Remember that all things goth and dark-ish use religious metaphors. And I know that religious background has a lot to do with the way you interpret it, like in the vast differences between the anti and pro\metaphor religious interpretations. I'm not a religious person, but I think that anti-religious interpretations in general when it comes to songs that are negative but have heavy religious symbolism tend to look at the symbolism at a too surface level.

kyoxne4ever, I think they might just be spiritual or inspired by religion. I mean, many fantasy books out there have Pagan and Christian influences, but the author could be either or neither. After all, goth symbolism in general has many pagan and Christian influences like the usage of crosses and pentagrams.

But for that answer, you'd have to ask them.

But the music video for this is neat, but I think it's a bit too much like many of NightWish's music videos which feature the vocalist in a Celtic-inspired dress and walking though the woods. XD

I read in Wikipedia that yes, it is inspired by Da Vinci Code, but also that Sharon said it's both about keeping your own faith no matter even if it's awkward and fringe, but at the same time how faith is used to justify sin.

My Chemical Romance – Kill All Your Friends Lyrics 18 years ago
If it means about the friends being a bunch of backstabbing people who gossip and betray you, then I can totally relate to this song.

But I also agree it could tie in with the patient story.

When I hear this song it brings to mind a kind of feeling, it's hard to describe, but I don't know if there's even a word in the English language for it, "rebellious" dosen't cut it.

The feeling is when you are being condemned and people accuse you and try to hurt and mock you...but rather than feel hurt...you just take it with a smile, somehow you feel proud of being an awful person to these people because you know they are not the saints they want you to be.

I dunno, to me this is kinda when the patient is probably visited by a priest or something and it told he's going to Hell for the bad things he has done and he laughs it off(maybe because he knows the priest is just as bad as him?), or maybe as someone suggested, it was a time when he was a total jerk.

My Chemical Romance – Mama Lyrics 18 years ago
Because I never heard the whole album in order I never picked up that the songs told a story, which I think it's neat because even stories we can relate to like songs and derive meaning anyway. Who knows? Maybe they are dying to write a musical...but then a bunch of dumb angry anti-MCR metal kids will take down the there and protest...and then Gerard and his band will write a song about it :D

Whenever I hear this song, at find it was hard to relate it to war really, but then there was those last lines and well...interesting. The part about "they're building a coffin your size" maybe relates to that even civilians are victims of war, in reality most victims of war are civilians.

My Chemical Romance – Thank You For The Venom Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about guilt and suicide, of course I have my own biases here along with other people's perceptions.

I can't help but notice all the suicide-related imagery...poisons, alcohol, pills, guns, etc.

All the talk against preaching, well it's centered around a doubt of being saved instead of plain ol' "don't shove it in my throat". A loss of faith is involved here but not just any kind of loss of faith but rather a loss of faith in some kind of salvation.

It reminds me of those people that commit suicide because they feel so guilty and believe that nobody, not even whatever God they believe in can forgive them and feel that they deserve to burn in hell for all the things they have done.

It might also be a lack of faith in the will to live, a sense of sheer hopelessness, hence "give me a cause to lead". "You're running after something you'll never kill" Is like the guilt or hopelessness itself that won't go away no matter what.

The first four lines are basically. "This is just the way I am, carry on because at least you have something to live for\you have a reason to keep on living\you have a pretty face you can rely on but I have nothing."

I think my interpretation is rather crude, but this is what comes to mind when I listen to it. ^^

The second part kinda does add in the idea that maybe a murder of some kind was involved, hence the guilt.
