Matthew Good Band – Deep Six Lyrics 13 years ago
Going with this whole Noel Gallager thing, I think the song jumps between making a point, sarcastic commentary, and angry "what the hell are you thinking" kind of mentality.
Basically its saying everyone should be aware and responsible for the world and if you have a voice and can impact people do it. We're all gunna die anyway why not make your life mean something?

So to me this is what I interpret the song as:

The first verse refers to the inevitability of death and the weight that has on people. However I think the phrase "Come to bare" is a play on words. Come to bear (being a used phrase) meaning holding a heavy weight/realization and come to bare being a more of a exposure idea. So 'bare' either refers to exposing ones soul, or the naked truth of death while still conveying the heft that your days are numbered. Then sarcastically "maybe our luck will change", obviously you'll die everyone does, all over the world, in terrible conditions.

Polyurethane is a highly flammable building/coating/gluing material. Modern society is built to burn and just because "people live in the rain" doesnt mean they wont feel the heat --> Ignorance doesnt stop destruction. Turning a blind eye for whats comfortable to the audience is ridiculous.

The chorus is basically frustration with people's (Noel's) disconnect from the world. From world issues, from what runs our countries and what destroys them. What happy land filled with unicorns are you in that you think it doesn't effect you? Wise up and at least try to realize whats going on in your actual world.

Big crash --> any tragedy/accident Funny car --> what people fixate on. They detach from the humanity of the situation and focus on something fantastical that's easier to swallow.
Is where you been where you are? --> Are you so narrow sighted? Fame got to you? Are you so accustomed to privilege you can't notice suffering?
Think fast... ---> be the change. do something. OR alternatively a stab at war mentality; if you cant beat them shoot em

Still though this is fun find a box when im done --> referring to being an empty (non issue) songwriter is fun. being ignorant is fun/carefree. when your done with life you hop in a coffin and there you go. no impact. but hey, maybe our luck will change!

You have one life. If you have the forum to make a difference why waste it. Its easy to be ignorant in this society and only care about yourself but its not socially responsible to ignore the world around you. "I don't know where you think you are" but this world isnt just some champagne supernova of high day dreams.

Norah Jones – Humble Me Lyrics 16 years ago
Kevin Breit wrote the song not Norah. Norah barely writes any of the songs she sings. The song is about the difficulty of being away from his family when they were on tour. He eventually left the band because he didn't want to sacrifice his family especially with his children so young.

Matthew Good Band – Fated Lyrics 16 years ago
Anyone can take whatever they want out of a song so here's my spin:

Clearly this is about someone severely depressed, he feel's like adventure is behind him and he'd just rather not move. He feels so shitty about himself he'd rather lie in bed and watch what little life he has drip away from him. I feel the IV represents more inertia than anything. the painting on the wall reflects the guilt and memories of his mistakes. He's seen you naked a million times as in he's seen what you are, what you really are(either that or the painting if it could see has seen him at his most vulnerable times). The chorus is self explanatory as it's a commentary on his mind set. He's depressed and confused and feels only death can bring clarity or at least an stop to the endless twine of confusion/emotion/stress thats built in his mind.
The cartoon killer is the loss of innocence all who've experienced depression desperately wish never happened. Like two completely oxymoronic things he can't ever succeed at life because from the beginning he was marked to only survive inside the dark empty void of depression.
This is a deeply crushing song of hopelessness yet it's so beautiful in its pure raw sincerity.

That's my spin anyway I'd love for some dialog to improve it.
"One can only see what one observes, and one can only observe what one already has in the mind"

Matthew Good Band – While We Were Hunting Rabbits Lyrics 16 years ago
Another way to look at this song is through a more political eye.
It could be about the USA and all the propaganda they spread about the war in the middle east. They pay people off, rebuke reputations and in a couple cases violently "shut you up". Matt has a history of being very politically minded so I wouldn't doubt him weaving it into a very clever song.
The states really has spent more than a life's work covering up violence and war mongering. The rabbits in this case would symbolize more the innocent lives that are hunted down only to be falsely criminalized by govt and govt supporting media. Eventually this soldier character looks up and sees the truth behind whats going on. Realizing that all this time he's been in the dark sneaking around he has no idea whats REALLY been going on. Now he's lost.
Many supporters of the war preform the same "song and dance" but there just pons in a game of military totalitarianism.
Now he realizes we're all lost blind fools.

THIS IS AN OPINION please dont take it to heart if you disagree

Matthew Good – Blue Skies Over Bad Lands Lyrics 16 years ago
mmmmm simple, meaningful, enchanting.
I think alot of this has to do with the mindset of western society.
The news, government , media in general sells the people of the middle east as our enemies. Tyrannous and crude. But when you get down to it they feel, hurt, fear just like us, like everyone. We hear about them on the news almost everyday and its like there's nothing we can do. But still this drilled in mentality against them almost depersonalizes the situation. We're so far we don't have to face it, but if we did...

Truly a multi-layered song. Its absolutely brilliant!

Matthew Good Band – Generation X-Wing Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this is a song about getting dumped.
Love is soul crushing and it tore a piece of said person apart.
He feels like a shadow of what he once was when she loved him.
She made him feel better than he saw himself, and her only felt that way cause of her, now he see's himself completely negatively.
The part about the sister I would think would be something about how he was never satisfied and looking back he should of been cause he just bever realized what she meant till she was gone.

Thats not the best interpretation I'll admit but you get the point. Only Matt knows.

Matthew Good – Black Helicopter Lyrics 16 years ago
After long listening to this song (mostly cause i love it) i just kinda realized that its way more directed at government negligence and ignorance. Especially directed at the united states. How they think war is the answer and how they think it'll bring peace. This is evident in "hey sammy ain't you heard? Only killers call killing progress" Sammy as in Uncle Sam. Its about how this is all gunna come back to haunt the states. Also how governments and citizens try to ease their consciences with "food aid rock and roll" but its hypocritical cause the next minute they're playing an x-box war game to pretend they're in the middle of this disgrace in the middle east. But in the end we're all killers if we think this is going anywhere. We're greedy and self involved, while they get bombed to Styrofoam we sit pretty living vicariously living life through tv.

once again scratch the surface i think i just felt like ranting! but feel free to argue and correct me!

I think this is a commentary on how our society sees all this stuff on tv and in video games but never really take it to heart. people are dying but we'd rather play the game than live with the reality that it's our fault it still goes on. We would find it devistating if something like whats going on in the middle east happen here in north america.. but since its happeneing there its just "natural". Its saying what goes around comes around, what we create becomes our fate kinda deal. We think killing is the answer but that just makes us murderers.

personally i feel thats a really scratch the surface interpretation i know theres something deeper...

I feel this song is about not being able to be yourself. Squashing individuality so everyone looks uniform and acts the same. "buy in it'll shut you up".
The character in the song is just beginning to realize he's never really acted as himself he's always pretended to be what everyone else is. "Till now I was a soldier. Till now I dealt in fear."
Now he finds that all this time pretending to be what he's not has left him not knowing what or who he really is. even when he tries to be different he's still acting the same. It's a song about confusion basically.
Also i agree with The Cage the rabbits are human beings and him hunting them is like society using us as soldiers to push the majority into conformity. During this process was when the character had his epiphany so to speak.
Thats just my opinion though..
the great thing about art like this is it's left up to the interpretor. Amazing song!!

I completely agree with Parallax Panorama
You hit the exact same meaning I was fully ready to relate! Its a complex song but its primary theme is insecurity in love.

Matthew Good – Alert Status Red Lyrics 17 years ago
This is an amazing song by a very talented Canadian musician (one of my favourites).
Personally I feel this song is about the purity of the world and how we as a corporate society have royally fucked it up.
Also it demonstrates how ignorance is bliss in regards to material obsessions. He explains how inescapable the drive for material living is and how those who can ignore it are the lucky ones.
In turn he touches on how we're driven by wants or what is aesthetically pleasing creating our downfalls and invisibly destroying parts of our lives.
I agree that a majority of the song is about a finger on the panic button, needlessly. Probably to win over gullible frightened sheep.

Bush – Swallowed Lyrics 18 years ago
My interpretation of this song is clearly this person is in love with a girl who rly doesnt appreciate it to its full extent. he uses drugs to hide his pain and changes who he is to try to forget about her.his friends would probably never guess he has so much hurt because he can nvr truly be himself around them. without her he's empty, meaningless, and depressed. he clearly is very well liked and could have almost anyone he wants but it doesnt matter she's the only thing that makes sense. he doesnt understand why he cant fill the void and why he cant get away from this feeling and all the memories.....
but thats just my interpretation only the artist knows what it rly means =P i love bush and all there amazing musical genius!

Allele – Lost In Your Words Lyrics 18 years ago
k well its clear that this person is in love with someone
so much so he places them on a "pedestal"
he looks up to them and hangs on there every word
he looks to them to make sense of his own life because they seem to be the only thing that makes sense in it
this song is almost an obsession
but this person's clearly been broken before and trying to fill a void and they're convinced they found someone
