| Elbow – Switching Off Lyrics | 15 years ago |

wow, I do like the depth this song goes to, and the intended meaning behind it. For me this song has always been about love. Falling in love, and holding onto a person. Its one of the songs that i listen to when my girlfriend and I are long distance. I've never been quite sure why. I guess its either that she's the one to relax me 'switching off with you', or thinking now, that if I died I would want my last thought to be of her. Emotional song, and Elbow at their very very best. |

I REALLY like this song, well duhh As many have said it's about the commercialism of art, the way it is deploringly becoming an over-celebretised commodity to be bought at face value only, and last as long as any common fad. The references to the ease of stardom for doing sod allare evident in you dont need much to speak out, no class no wit no soul and: I feel now like Christine Keeler.. Steven Wilson has written this song to stand for the entire opposite, for what music should be like, an art form that is appreciated by those that adore it. With what everyone on this page has said, have a look at this video, I dont know whether it actually is the original Piano Lessons vid, but its pretty cool http://www.jango.com/artists/2001-Porcupine-Tree?l=0 Have fun :D Wilson's a legend |

HEY PORCUPINE TREE FANS! Check this... AS you may know there is a running debate over the meanings behid the songs in Deadwing album, and also the meaning of the Album as a whole. It is essentially a ghost story, look at other posts.. Yet I blather, why is he talking about Deadwing you say, this is In Absentia! What a moron! ... ...and yet... Check out the first three lines....... "A mother sings a lullabye to her child Sometime in the future the boy goes wild And all his nerves are feeling some kind of energy." Many people have postulated in their posts on the possibility of this being a reference to the serial killers (mentioned as a whole group of people in this song, it's more of a general overview of In Absentia), however, although this may be true, I have another which could run in parallel which really displays Steven Wilson's creative genius.. The Deadwing album was written to accompany a film currently in the making co-directed by Mr Wilson. On a blog _ there is a teaser, the first 15 minutes of the script. The film opens with a mother singing a 'lullaby to a child', in about the 1900's I guess, in the past anyhow. I won't go into the rest of the story and its references to Deadwing album but later we meet David, in the present, who obviously is having a bit of a hard time in life, and I suspect that strange things start to happen to him (he sees a Ghost in the 1st 5 mins) and then goes off the rails. 'some time in the future a boy goes wild', and 'I know his nerves are feeling some kind of energy'. This is trippy stuff, seriously, look into Deadwing album and that film, its just incredible how many links between songs and film etc if you know what to look for. But the question is, why here? Is this just a coincidence? Or was this planned and inserted into In Absentia on purpose, BEFORE Deadwing was even released??? Hmmmmmmmmm Cool innit :) Check my other posts on these awsome matters, Look Out for Blern! And do some digging, I want to get to the bottom of this one... PT, respect. |

Tbrings has problems, this much is evident, I cant think of any PT song concerning incest and I have 18 albums so SHUT UP ABOUT THE INCEST! Ahem... As part of the whole 'ghost story' theme of Deadwing, and its ties with the film-in-the-making co-directed by Steven Wilson, this song seems a bit odd... However..... Read the script of the first 15 mins of the film, and you will see references between David (actuall mentioned in Lazarus, he isnt (I think) actually the dead boy who is grieved by his mother) and this girl on the subway who lights up a ciggy everywhere, "she lights a cigarette", and everything kinda goes on from there. I have a running theory on the mysteries behind the storyline of the whole of deadwing, so look out for comments in the rest of the songs in the deadwing album, and also, curiously enough, in blackest eyes on In Absentia. Checkit PT rules, worship them. Signed Blern [Steve] |

| Porcupine Tree – Lazarus Lyrics | 17 years ago |

The whole album is something about a ghost story, almost definitely relating to the movie Steven Wilson is drafting (it looks amasing, real cool, moody and with strong references to the atmosphere of the deadwing album in particular), have a look for it... Im pretty sure this is about a mother grieving for her dead son, you can get that from some of the album photos, but I don't think that the son is david, as he's the main character in the film-to-be, a sound producer dude and he see's the ghost of this child. It's all kinda creepy, but just listen to the whole album and deadwing and Lazarus in particular with that in mind...a new image forms itself...... All Hail Porcupine Tree (Might I add that no-one gets to sit in the front of my car unless they love PT too :D -- lol) |

| Absolutely beautiful track, really moving and a message to, well everyone really. Its telling people that there is ALWAYS something good in life, you just have to look for it. It applies to everyone too, whether you're just stressed, or suffering from a breakup or even drug withdrawal, it all makes so much sense and gives a great feeling of hope. | |

| Porcupine Tree – Voyage 34 (Phase III) Lyrics | 18 years ago |

this is amasing, yes its voyage 34, the whole album questions the good and bad of LSD, and Phase I describes the trip of a guy whome, on his 34th trip, had his first real downer, a bad acid trip. Really cool, i love it. : ) |

| Porcupine Tree – Start of Something Beautiful Lyrics | 18 years ago |

The meaning in the song is summed up in the last stanza, its about a kid who was never loved, maybe unwanted. The way this destroyed the family. I dunno its difficult to explain...just feels like an extremely angry song, the things that were never said, the memories of the relationship that they thought they once held... Sad, but a surprisingly beautiful song |

You know, I was always thinking on the obvious serial killer/family abuser side of this track, and seeing through the life of a killer.... Dertt has NAILED it, I completely see what he said, makes so much sense. On top of that its a wicked song, probs my favorite PT song of the harder direction era, the lyrics are awsum, dark, and disturbing: u say them in a low gutteral tone in someones ear and God will u freak em out. Genius, gotta love Steven |

| Porcupine Tree – Shallow Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Yeah, what he sed ;) About someone who feels, for some reason, that they cannot be part of society, or be connected in any way to another person by means of a relationship. Bit abstarct, but hey. (I LIKE jarofsap's interpretation, because I believe PT's songs are made to represent life back to whoever is listening, so they can relate to it from their point of view and be affected in their own profound way) |

| Porcupine Tree – The Creator Has A Mastertape Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I agree with Bloodrager on the void thing, this seems to be about someone with problems that begin to creep into his own life and drives him to more insanity that already. [3rd stanza in lyrics above] "The creator had a master tape, but he left it in a cab" i recon refers to the creator ie: God, who had a master plan for this guy but he turned out wrong; maybe its the excuse he makes to himself of the murders etc he commits, the reason why. Equally this same analogy could be taken for the whole human race; that there are sum deep, fundamental problems in life and peoples lives in general. That the niceties of raising a family (etcetc) are fronts to a primal savagery. I dunno, that second bit just popped into my head just now... I love the way Wilsons songs seem to be made to be interpreted in light of each persons totally different opinion. |

| Porcupine Tree – Moonloop Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Does no one listen to this song or summat??? its like WOW, the 40:07 long song is SoOO good, especially when the bass picks up after the voice over of the moon landings, which is wicked. The fact that its an improvisation is just cool, and its the most relaxing thing to listen to on those hot summer days, or in Maths lessons :P | |
| Porcupine Tree – Stop Swimming Lyrics | 18 years ago |

This is absolutely fucking beautiful, its so amasing, pulls tears form your soul. Its about someone whos life they dont feel is worth living, and ultimately the stuggle for survival loses out (maybe its time to stop swimming), as theres no one to help them (no one will give me a map) ---and consequently goes under, ie: suicide: "ill leave now this cant continue", and "so i think ill leave by the window" The line "but I forget which door i came through" is a reference to the difficulty of ending your life i recon, as you dont remeber becoming alive, and so dont know how to find the way out...just a thought In anycase this is one of the greatest PT songs ever written, as good as In Formaldehyde on Recordings album..beautif, and the drums are awsum, so simple, so good.... |

| Porcupine Tree – Dark Matter Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This is a really beautiful song, its the best possible way to end the genius that is Signify. I think this song is about the way your actions have little consequence in the real run of things, but there is also groundings for the thing about people trying to make their lives significant. What the hell Its AMASING, one of those songs i pretty much passed over when I first heard the album, then I rediscovered it :), happy times, great song... If u like this one, listen to In Formaldehyde on Recordings Album [Oh and read my comment on it ;) ] This site rocks ------------------------------ |

| Oh yeah, and the (people walk through my insides is another reference to the only way he can be kept alive, 'preserved', like hes already died, by the drugs and doctors. | |
| Porcupine Tree – In Formaldehyde Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
OMG :O no one has commented on this song, practically one of my FAV PT tracks from their earlier work...here goes... This song is about euthanasia, i recon any hoo, (some where inside, i have died) about the way people are forced to waste away, unable to do anything (now we are coasting, talking less, breathing stress), and being kept alive, lying on a hospital bed, being concious and capable of a certain amount of thought but not really functioning (so I will lie, in formaldehyde) [formaldehyde is used as a really powerful presertive for preserving dead animals (for stuffing i thing etcetc)] the middle is talking about the hopelessness of his/her situation, and (or do you want me to stay?) kinda puts forward the whole arguement of why euthanasia is so difficult to imagine. But the guy is also asking his friends and family (fatherhood) - [hes a dad] to end his life for him (send me to sleep) (tie up loose ends, make it stop) The last stanza is the irony of the debate over euthanasia, that people are sent ot war and die, that people spent their entire lives damaging and hurting other people, but that they cannot end this one persons life who wants to die... Its so sad beautiful song, only Steven Wilson can make such a sad song so beautiful...... |

| Porcupine Tree – Gravity Eyelids Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I think this is about sexual molestation in some sense, the covering brown eyes things support this, and despite it being beautiful, im gonna have to say, sorry guys, these lyrics are dark, dark, dark...in a way only Wilson can make them...beautiful. | |
