Tool – Lateralus Lyrics 17 years ago
This song tells the listener to look past what we are told by the media, the church, and the people around us. We need to think for ourselves, swing on our spirals of thought and most of all, divinity. People think God exists because he can be comprehended, fathomed, but in reality, human thought is the Alpha and the Omega. Without us being able to think such a thing, it simply escapes existence. Maynard is telling us to draw outside the lines of traditional and accepted schools of thought.

This song is the complete sum-up of what NIN, or Trent, stands for. He is becoming the monster, the machine, and he believes it is the only way to recover from the hate, depression and hell he has already been brought through. He thinks he is unafraid because he becomes the thing that he was afraid of becoming. He straps himself in for the transformation, but he notices that in doing this he takes on much more he can handle, hence "It won't give up, it wants me dead, Goddamn this noise inside my head." He also needs support in this time, like Annie.

I can't stand this song. It isn't Trent. I agree with Pikachu - if we can get this song out of here, go for it!

Think deeper, and you will see that it is more than it sounds like. Personally, I think that it would fit quite well between Eraser and Reptile in The Downward Spiral. I could see it as the song that expresses how he does not want to lose the girl, and in Reptile, he feels betrayed by the same woman, but still in love with her.

Anybody think that maybe when Trent mentions God's arm, he is refering to the Presence, later discussed and revealed in Year Zero?
