I can't believe no-one's commented on this yet! Still, it's a great song. The narrator at 31 feels she's wasted half her life so she tries to make up for it by trying to embark on a relationship with a guy she's not in love with. Perhaps life is a competition for her, she has to get "this" done before that and "this" done now and so on and so forth. But her resolution goes, and carries on wasting her life and getting drunk and leaves it up to the Big Man Upstairs. She says "I thought my life would be better by now" even though she fails to realise it's her own fault for not trying to make the most of life. Anybody seen the video, it's hilarious! Especially the kitten bit... |

Is it about revenge perhaps? Jenny (our narrator) is fed up with an unkind drunk guy, and she's "got something" on him. And whoever is it will get their just desserts that day when she crawls "under the blacklight" and...honestly, I'm not sure if she'll kill him or just reveal her master plan. |

For some reason, that lyric hit me. Maybe Jenny thought after Elliott died just how many people cared about him, and if they did care about him there was bound to be people who cared about her too. It probably gave her a new perspective on life. It's sorta uplifting, even though the occasion is so sad... I hope I'm getting this across OK! |

I first heard this song a couple of days ago. It's so easy to relate to. I mean, isn't there always someone who you want to shout: "Hey, I'm right here! If you want me tell me!" at? And it's just so beautiful...the song, of course. |

I agree, that's a great line.
I think it's about how the narrator is in love with someone and she is recounting their early relationship. But this "someone" is always getting into scraps and escapades and what have you. ("I was your silver lining high up on my toes but you were running through fields of hitchhikers as the story goes") She lets him go and is "gold", she won't go "back in the hole". She comes to regret it though, she feels "so wicked." They reunite and she is his silver lining again, and now she's gold!....again. |
