this could be related to global warming, from where it mentions "Are you at war with land And all of its creatures" this could be mentioning leaders and industries who dont care about protecting the climate "Even though we cant afford" is about the excuses those people make for why they cant stop harming the environment |

the chorus works just as well either way round from love came creation -adam and eve stuff inspires first religions from the creation came the swing from the swing came the pauper - a pauper is a person who lives in poverty from the pauper came the king - a poor person needs someone to rule him, or to serve from the king came the prophet - the king decides that god wants him to do something, or he wants more power so proclaims himself or a puppet as a prophet to spread 'gods' word the 'swing' could be taken to mean many things, it could mean fun/passtimes/procreation. and you cant have fun without work, if a powerful person, ie a king has lots of time having fun, someone else has to do a lot more work to make up for it, the pauper does this extra work |

I agree that this song is about how we use religion as an excuse to go to war, but the song isnt necessarily about war itself. but through the whole of history religion has been behind most wars. "Come lay it down, wont you, Come burn it down, cant you" this is an invitation to fight and "praise the lord and pass the ammunition" is a religious leader telling people that god wants them to fight |

a more explicit interpretation of this song is that he killed his lover because she was lying to him, perhaps she was having an affair, but from his point of view she has killed herself because her actions led to her death "She took my hand and I let her go" and "Took my hand and she ended it all" |
