The Chemical Brothers – Let Forever Be Lyrics 18 years ago
r3j3ct is bang on. Although I've loved this song for a long time, it was only recently that I watched The Salton Sea and saw the song in a very different context. Crystal fiend is a methhead, although the emotions in this song are very fitting for many addictions. Heroin's mine; and this is one of my favourite songs. It's amazing how well they captured this little chunk of emotion that surrounds an addict's life.

Folk Implosion – Natural One Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm pretty sure this is a song about promiscuity. He can sleep around with whoever he pleases, free love, he can do what he wants when no one's around. Even when it starts to feel empty and repetitive (just meaningless sex) he keeps doing it because it's become a matter of pride, and he still acts like he loves it.

Elliott Smith – Don't Go Down Lyrics 18 years ago
The different interpretations are really interesting to read, because to me, the meaning of this song is pretty obvious.

He meets a girl who's got some serious issues; 'hard and cracked as the Liberty Bell'. The 'snowball in hell' either refers to the rarity of a girl exactly like she was, or the rarity of his chances of meeting her. He becomes her support, getting her to move in with him and promising that he'll work towards getting them a better place to spend the rest of their lives.

She had an abusive family they both had to deal with, who obviously didn't like him and tried to control her, probably break up their relationship; their influence was one of the things that contributed to how messed up she was and how critical she was of herself, hence the 'sense of worthlessness she'd have to rise above' despite his fighting the negative influences of her family with his devotion.

Again, the chorus continues to simply be support; down go down, stay with me, don't give in to your negative urges to give up on life, to kill yourself.

The last verse is almost a reverse; this time it is her begging him to stay, showing her own insecurities that she is fearful he'll leave her. She had a dream where something bad happened (the death could easily be symbolic - it's a dream after all) and he immediately cut and run instead of being there for her, and she begs him to stay. Or, it could be that she really did die, but it's a message for him to continue and stay alive and stay positive despite losing her.

Although there are no direct references to drugs in this and it could be a completely drug-free song, this is VERY reminiscent of a typical junkie relationship, and while it might be coincidence the words do work with a double meaning. Spend eternity - rather than spend their lives together, a common sentiment with drug use. Obviously with her as messed up as she is and the way he was, there's a good chance she was already a drug user. Don't go down could also be a reference to not giving in to addiction and letting it ruin her life. Finally, the last bit reminds me a lot of the 'dreams' that you have when you're on the nod with heroin, and often those dreams are actually surprisingly unpleasant (you think of heroin as a drug that makes you feel totally happy, but some of those on-the-nod dreams are FRIGHTENING - if you haven't seen the full video of Smashing Pumpkin's Try, Try, Try then you really must; aside from illustrating my point beautifully it is an amazing but sad as hell video). She had not a legitimate sleep dream but a heroin dream, or quite possibly she actually overdosed and again, either had that dream while ODing or really did die but the reassurance is there for him now, not her.
