I'm sure you can interpret the song to be about racism. I'm also sure you can interpret the song about physically making love for the first time, because of that scene in Cruel Intentions that everyone is referring to. Neither of these misenterpret the song, however when I hear it, I hear it a lot differently. I believe that this song is about a man who has thus far been incapable of falling in love. "I am taffy stuck and tongue tied/Stutter-shook and uptight/Pull me out from inside" I am covered my skin/No one gets to come in/Pull me out from inside/I am folded/And unfolded/And unfolding" These two verses of the song show how he has previously struggled with love. He has created a shell ("covered in skin/No one gets to come in") through which no woman has been able to pass. He has not allowed anyone to see his true self, and without that, love is impossible. But now he has met someone who he believes can "pull (him) out from inside," and discover who he truly is, becoming his first real love. Therefore, the colorblind reference to me, does not mean skin color, or being colorblind in the literal sense...it's just a device used to illustrate how his life is bleak and lacking color because it is lacking love. Things life coffee and egg whites...they seem more than just "black" and "white" when you have love in your life. In love, everything is illuminated and vibrant. This is my perspective of the song, but of course everyone is entitled to their own. I don't believe it's dirty, or really about sex at all, but since it's meaning is so powerful and it's a beautiful love song, I think it was a good choice for the scene in Cruel Intentions. Basically, it's an amazing song, that gives me shivers every time I hear it... |

while i've never heard this song before in my life, i was curious so i read the lyrics and just had to laugh because i'm currently struggling through the exact same situation. just by a random act of fate, you stumble upon someone who just effects you, in a way you can't really explain, though you know nothing about them. they just consume your thoughts and you have no idea why, but you know that you would give anything to hit rewind and find them, find out who they are, and if they are somewhere thinking about you too. it's all about opportunities missed. i know a little too much about how that feels... |

When I first heard this song, it hit me really hard and I wasn't really sure why because I didn't think it applied to me at all. Then I took a look at the lyrics and found that this song is so relevent to my life... Over the sea and far away/She's waiting like an iceberg/ Waiting to change/But she's cold inside/She wants to be like the water" I think this part means that she is trying to get over someone just by waiting it out, hoping that time will change her. However, she's "cold inside," frozen and locked in her feelings for him, but she'd rather be like water - fully able to move freely as it pleases. "The fire fades away/Most of everyday/Is full of tired excuses/But it's to hard to say/I wish it were simple/But we give up easily/You're close enough to see that/You're the other side of the world to me." -For me, this part of the song means that she intends to get over him, but she's making excuses for herself because it's such a difficult task. She still loves him, but she can clearly see that he's the other side of the world - unattainable, and she has no choice but to move on. "On comes the panic light/Holding on with fingers and feelings alike/But the time has come/To move along" -This part is the most obvious to me - she realizes it's now or never, and as much as she wants to hold on with all of her heart, she needs to let go. And finally, "Can you help me/Can you let me go"" -This final plea is what effected me so much, because I couldn't possibly relate to this more. This is her asking him to move on with his own life, to help her move on as well. She can't stop loving him if there is any hope that they could regain whatever they had...so she needs him to let go. Completely heartwrenching... This is just an analysis from my perspective. I firmly believe that artists, including musicians, craft their work to fit their own personal meaning, but also leave room for other people to interpret them and derive meaning in their own ways...from their own experiences. This is why songs like this one can touch so many people in a mulititude of ways. No interpretation is wrong, really.. But this song is amazing :) |

I saw this song live too! Incredible. Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but I thought that this song was just about having someone to stand by you and support you through anything. It's about not being entirely sure where your life is leading you, it's about making your own decisions ("I will live as I see fit"), and sometimes this may involve being wrong, or contradicting yourself ("Sick of you, and I'm sick of me/I'm sick of wars, and I'm sick of peace...."). However, it's also about going through life with someone who will be by you through it all and defend you. At least this is what I got out of it...let me know what you think. |

Everything about this song is mournful. Dave's voice at some points makes it sound like he's actually close to crying...and the fact that it's just his voice and a single guitar adds to the feeling of loneliness. I agree 100% with p_nunan. He's grieving the death of the woman he loved, and still loves. The memory of her and the feelings he has for her will remain stuck inside of him forever, and this is the "some angel, some devil" reference. The memories of her are obviously special, hence the "some angel," but the fact that she's gone forever will make these memories almost like a devil inside of him - an impediment to his happiness, that he cannot relinquish. This song is so beautifully written and composed in such a sincere and heartbreaking manner...it's definitely one of my favorite songs by Dave. |
