Alex Turner – Stuck On The Puzzle (Full Version) Lyrics 14 years ago
I see what you mean about people actually liking her; the point I was trying to make was that no one knows why that fall for her. It's a similar concept to Shakespeare's Sonnet 130.

Alex Turner – Stuck On The Puzzle (Full Version) Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm not sure your friend will still love it if she realises what it's about...

Turner sets out the song by saying that he's not a romantic, "I'm not the kind of fool who's gonna sit and sing to you about stars, girl", but the whole song is about how he's attracted to someone that no one else likes. She pissed off the stars. People tell her she's trouble. Alex asked people but no one knew why they surrendered to her. Even he tried to escape but his feet got "caught in the middle"... He's stuck on the puzzle of why he loves this girl, because no one else does.

Coldplay – Lost+ (feat. Jay-Z) Lyrics 15 years ago
I personally love this version, and the reason I love it is because Jay-Z slots into the track perfectly (I should say here that this is all my opinion, obvious I know, but I wouldn't want anyone thinking I believe my word to be gospel).

The Martin lyrics are quite ambiguous to me, but I think that when Jay adds his verse, the whole song seems to be saying that success isn't easy and anyone can fall from grace. I don't think the rap is a deviation from the meaning of Lost and I don't think Jay-Z steals the limelight; his verse is very much about the meaning behind his words and not the fact he's a superstar gatecrashing a rock song.

Obviously everyone is different, and some people would put this on repeat, others wouldn't be seen dead listening to this. What you have to remember though is that Jay-Z is one of the most successful rappers that's ever lived and he's made that living somehow; he obviously has a talent, whether you like it/can spot it is something else.

Kanye West – Power Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this is Kanye's best single since Jesus Walks. The whole rumbling of the guitars throughout really resonates with what he's saying, the line "Screams from the haters, got a nice ring to it / I guess that every superhero needs his theme music" is fantastic, the idea of him riding the criticism is something that we really all associate with Kanye. Not only that line, it's full of them, the whole SNL putdown is brilliant, the way he says that it's like "custody" trying to keep his creativity is really quite thoughtful, and the martyrdom/suicide theme at the end just tops it off. The production, as you would expect, is second to none; the handclaps, piano, chanting, King Crimson sample and Dwele cameo fit together like pieces of a jigsaw. It's a work of art, and if the rest of MBDTF is as good, I'll be one happy man. :)

Beethoven wasn't a lyricist, nor was he a rapper, a popstar or a producer; he was a composer.

Muse – Citizen Erased Lyrics 15 years ago
As with most Muse songs, it's about a dystopian future with a corrupt government. The coda is fantastic, and echoes 1984 really with the "erase all the memories".

Also, I can see the 1984 thing. I'm not sure how it ties in with Wogan...

Franz Ferdinand – The Dark of the Matinee Lyrics 16 years ago
Everybody's mentioned the school bit which I think is pretty accurate...

"So I'm on BBC2 now, telling Terry Wogan how I made it
What I made is unclear, but his deference is and his laughter is
My words and smile are so easy now
Yes, It's easy now
Yes, It's easy now"

...I think this bit is really interesting though. Kapranos states he's "made" it but what he's made is "unclear". What is clear though is his "deference" and "laughter".

So really, all that really matters is living a full life? I think what he's trying to say is legacy means nothing.

Muse – Exogenesis: Symphony Part 3 (Redemption) Lyrics 16 years ago
Brilliant idea, but sadly I don't think it's true. Bellamy is in no way religious whatsoever and has constantly referred to science in Muse songs, it would be a shock if he started basing songs on Jesus now.

But otherwise, I see your comparison.

I just wanted to add that i love the way Alex pines "So come on home..."

Bloc Party – Mercury Lyrics 17 years ago
Planets sometimes appear to go backwards, this is retrograde motion. I don't know the relevance with the song but Mercury was named after a God of trade profit and commerce, and the element of mercury is notoriously poisonous.

Hope that helps with your interpretations.

Gorillaz – DARE Lyrics 17 years ago
When Blur first started they released an album entitled Leisure. It followed a long line of madchester-styled bands of the time but showed glimpses of
pure brilliance, pour example Sing, any Albarn newcomers, get a listen its truly beautiful... Inspiration of Lost? by Coldplay.

Now, one of the leading bands at the time who were described under the same madchester bracket were The Happy Mondays, fronted by Shaun Ryder who sings vocals on this track.

Ryder was, and still is so I've heard, a huge influence to Albarn and his work. Albarn according to legend loved the way that Ryder pronounces "there"; ever heard someone say something in an accent and thought "wow that sounds great with his/her voice?

Well reportedly it was Albarn just admiring his hero and "exploiting" if you like the strengths of a vocalist: in this case, his accent...

Oh and you lot that think this is about drugs? Ryder may have seen more weed than Alan Titchmarsh but just because a writer does drugs, doesnt mean they write about it? Pete Townshend? David Bowie? Occaisonal defences but nothing concrete... Check out Albarn's past lyrics; Charmless Man, Parklife... Some of the stuff from 13 alludes to his fiancée's addiction but he doesnt seem the type to me.

Coldplay – Violet Hill Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about a guy who has to go to war, and he's looking for a reason to stay. The only reason he has is a girl, who won't tell him that she loves him, so he goes to fight for her. Sad, really.

It's a really beautiful song, I'm not a massive Coldplay fan, but this just captivates all those that listen to it.

Gorillaz – Feel Good Inc. Lyrics 17 years ago
Alternate interpretation... I haven't read all the comments, so you might have already commented on this, but here's an interpretation about the "pop" industry. Not saying it's right, not saying it's wrong.

City's breaking down on a camel's back
(pop music's going down the drain)
They'll just have to go coz they don't know wack
(these "bosses" in the industry will have to go, simply because they're not musically talented)
So all ya fill the streets it's appealing to see
(asking people to watch it happen, coz it's refreshing to watch)
And you won't get undercounted cause you're damn ass free
(everybody matters, because you're free?)

You got a new horizon it's an ephemeral style
(these bosses have to change direction from feel good songs...)
In a melancholy town where we never smile
(...to more thought provoking music, albeit more depressing)
And all I want to hear is the message beep
(waiting? dunno what for.)
My dreams they come a kissin' cause I don't get sleep no
(he doesn't sleep any more so when he does his dreams are welcome)

Windmill windmill for the land
(symbol of never going hungry)
Turn forever hand in hand
(this symbol being eternal)
Take it all there on your stride
(Don't worry about life)
It is tickling fallin' down
(time is precious)
Love forever love is free
(self explanatry)
Turn forever you and me
(calling on listener to change for good)
windmill windmill for the land
(reinforcing the symbol of never going hungry)
Is everybody in?
(calling on everyone)

I'm not gonna work out the bit from De La Soul, it's too complex. The first verse to me is really Damon Albarn watching feel good music change to darker themes and then in the chorus he stands up for it. It would make sense, as with Blur he made feel good songs; Coffee + TV, Girls and Boys, Parklife...

Let me know if you agree, i mean Albarn's a genius there's proably 3/4 different references to completely different themes in there somewhere that we've all missed, I'm just trying to provide another side to the story.

Santigold – L.E.S. Artistes Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's about someone wanting to do something (probably music) so they can stand up for themselves. and she makes a lot of references to the fact she is going it alone. one lyric that did interest me... "You're my enemy you fast talker"... you see to me that means that she is at war with rappers... incredible song.

Mark Ronson – Stop Me Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's about a guy who goes out and cheats on his gf, gets the crap kicked out of him occasionally... "who said i lied because i never" suggests that she's found out, but he's still denying it. "this one before", the "one" i think is an apology.

As for the Ronson Vs Morissey debate... i personally prefer the ronson version. the vocals are better, the strings combined with the beat are amazing and he's brought it totally up to date in the 21st century.

Morissey's a genius, but this version is incredible.

Kasabian – Shoot the Runner Lyrics 18 years ago
"Chang" is a term used in Liverpool for Cocaine, not sure whether it extends to Leicester, Kasabian's hometown.

I reckon "bitch" is just added to the song because it's colloquial, and for no significant meaning. for example, Dave Chappelle's "I'm Rik James, Bitch!" Why bitch there? No reason.

Is he actually king? is it a metaphor that he is powerful? more powerful than the "runner"?

Not entirely sure on the overall meaning, but sex, power and philosophy (live you days like the last) all come into it.

Maxïmo Park – Apply Some Pressure Lyrics 18 years ago
i dont actually know what it's about. i would hazard a guess, albeit probably wrong that it's about a relationship.

he starts off by telling her everything he loves about her, and then contemplates losing her, and the after-effects it may have. towards the end though, it's as is he tells his conscience that he still has her.

that's just the way i see it.

it's interesting actually, that ronson chooses to add the supremes song on the end, when the themes are kind of different. the apologetic tone changes slightly...
