Sorry for posting 3x in a row but I just I had a brainwave. The "I'm the real deal" line could be a reference to Kurt Cobain being terrified of being thought of as a phony corporate rock sell out. Remember reading about him giving away a brand new Volvo Courtney bought him for fear of looking like he had any money? |

It's suggested that the real deal line is a reference to drag. That said, Stipe being gay, it's probably safe to assume he's not the central character in the song using his intelect to constantly reinvent himself in attempt to hold the attention and affection of the object of his desire. Courtney Love said she though this song was about her and there actually be some truth in that. Stipe openly said "Let Me In" was a tribute to Kurt Cobain, but I think it's possible that this song is Stipe's commentary or intepretation of Kurt and Courtney's relationship, Kurt being the guy desperately trying to constantly reinvent himself terrified of loosing her who seamingly loved him only for his intelect?
