Well, to those of you who say that all mars volta songs have to have a meaning, i don't see why that's true. I could picture cedric sitting down and writing completely nonsensical lyrics just to throw us off, they even said that some of this album was just about inside jokes. Amputechture is the only one of their albums without an actual "story", so why wouldn't they just write nonsensical lyrics? I'm not saying that these lyrics ARE nonsensical, but they could be.
Also I'd just like to point out that "amputechture" is a word that TMV made up, they said themselves that it doesn't have a meaning.

I love this song. I think it has something to do with doing something that nobody else has done/doing something that everyone else is afraid to do/not caring about what other people are doing and doing what youw anna do. I love the second verse. The line "I say never again to friends and fads and fitting in" (alliteration ftw) is amazing. And I love the way "A phantom walks to the sea Fades and secretly drowns until his heart's appeased" feels when you say it. Its a really fun line to say/sing. |

There's an interview with Charles on youtube and he said that this song is actually a narrative. I won't go into that much detail (you can look the interview up yourself if you want to), but its basically about this guy who lives in some remote part of the earth and he gets bored so he decides to capture the Great White Whale, which is kind of the "king" of all the animals in the land. He captures it, but then the animals revolt against him because they want their leader back. I'd highly reccomend listening to the full interview, he talks about the meanings af almost all the songs. |

Another great song by SAW! What i get from the last verse is that he's about to commit suicide, which is really sad and pretty dark. But, thats what i think he must mean by "relieving my mind from desperate thoughts". And why would he want people to remember him unless there was a reason to forget him (aka he's dead)? |

This is a great song. I read somewhere that its about ghosts, and I'm pretty sure it is. Its pretty much the only Secret and Whisper song with lyrics that make sense.

I don't think "meet you in the light" really means death. I think its just talking about hapiier times tghat are ahead. I think the song is just about going through a rough time and knowing that there are better times ahead. I don't really think it has to do with faling in love. But I supose it could. |

I'd also like to note that Lee Ho Fook's is a real resturant in Soho (London, not NYC). they have a picture of Warren Zevonon their window and ironically, Beef Chow Mein is not on theri menu. |

This song was NOT origanally done by Nina Simone. She was just one of the first people to cover it. It was originally used in a musical written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse called "The Roar of the Greasepaint—the Smell of the Crowd". Its been covered by a whole bunch of people. As to what it means, I'm pretty sure that its not sarcastic because i think i read somewhere that Matt Bellamy said he wanted to include a happy song on origin of symmetry or something like that. I guess if your depressed you could listen to it and think of it as sarcastic. And if your happy, you could listen to it and think of it as sincere. Its useful in any situation lol |

This is a great song I love the riff. I think it goes with Time is Running Out. Almost like in this song he wants "it" then he finally gets "it" but in Time is Running Out "it" destroys him and he wants to get rid of "it". |

This song really reminds me of The Phantom of The Opera. I mean there's the whole stalker thing (the Phantom is definitely a stalker) but you still really feel sorry for the guy. And when he says "sing you off to sleep" it like when the Phantom is singing Christine to sleep. |
