I always thought that this song was directed at soldiers involved in the war. "there's blood spilled on the floor everyone's staring at you, what for till you realize the blood is probably yours" -During the battle, the soldier gets shot. Duh. "you feel you've lost something you want it back you're lying motionless on your back and your legs aren't taking any more requests those disobedient wrecks how you cared for them as they carried you from class to class and coast to coast" -The soldier is lying on it back, and realize that its dying. "your fright gives way to memory having coffee with your love or the story your father told you long ago he was hunting with his own father for deer he pointed and spotted her and tripped over some roots or some dead trees the gun went off it was a mistake and my father was only eight and as he watched the dying deer he was changed cause cos he felt sorry for what he'd done and he put down his gun" -The soldier is reliving memories, his final thoughts before he passes away. His life passes before his eyes. "will you feel sorry for what you've done? will you put down your gun?" -Jenny is asking the soldier if it regrets having entered the war, having killed people, and if it had a second chance, would it take it back. "cause there's no accidental death when you're the indian in the cougar's nest" -The soldier's death can't be called an accident. The soldier chose to go to war, putting itself in the position to be killed. The father's killing of the deer was an accident, and he regret it. The soldier can't. |

I think this song is about two people who agree to just be "friends with benefits", but the boy ends up falling for her. "Asking me discreetly, When she can come meet me, Later on tonight." A secret liason! They're just fooling around every once in awhile; they're just hookup buddies. "Don't tell me what you're doing to me I don't want to look sleazy, But you make it seem so easy." She's more comfortable with the arrangement than he is, and he doesn't want to know why. "Anna, please get off the phone now I've got to let you know now, It's time for you to take me home. She doesn't really care about him, which is why she's on the phone while he's there, but he is starting to really care about her, and he wants her to take him home so he can try to put it out of his mind. Is it just me, or does this song seem to be about the entertainment industry and the boys that use the girls in it? "Turn around there's those eyes again. Turn around fake indifference and I. Watch their cold, dark silhouettes disappear. A hundred bodies fill this room. And all their faces overdone. Pain is foreign, foreign to us." The famous girl and her boy are at a club, probably on drugs, dressed to the nines. They've never had to deal with needing or wanting anything. "I don't even know you. You won't even know I'm gone. Was it something I did wrong?" They don't know their fans; and when their star fades, their boy will leave, no one will even remember them, and they'll be left holding an empty bag, wondering if there was anything they could have done to prevent their star from burning out. "Roses, roses cold. Roses, roses sold out." No one brings them roses anymore, when before, they would "sell out" and everyone would bring them roses. The boy who used to bring her flowers also leaves. "Turn around reds and whites again." They see other people getting the recognition they once got from the fans and the boy. "I'd sell my kicks for one more low tar. Fevers hand in hand with shoelace bracelets." They'd give anything to be back in the spotlight, and back with the boy. "Why are some girls so naive? He didn't unbutton your blouse to see. A better view of your heart. Oh yeah, can't blame you for trying." She sees how the boy used her and is now using other girls, falling into the same trap she once did. "Sing it soft. Make it slow. Apples parachute the boys back down. Fill it up. Overflow. A new, improved modern way to feel." Soft and slow songs are usually used at the end of a movie, and the boy is coming crashing to his ending. But the cycle starts all over again. |
