Belle & Sebastian – Piazza, New York Catcher Lyrics 12 years ago
Some very interesting interpretations on here! Mine's a simpler one; this is at its heart a love song mixed with Stuart's passion for baseball, beautifully laced with references from film and music.

The songs on Dear Catastrophe Waitress were recorded in summer 2003. A year earlier Stuart Murdoch met his now wife Marisa Privitera...

Elope with me, Miss Private, and we’ll sail around the world
I will be your Ferdinand and you my wayward girl

"Miss Private" is a play on words on Marisa's name. As noted by another poster here, Ferdinand is a reference to the protagonist from "Pierrot le Fou", and the "wayward girl" Mariane with whom he runs away.

How many nights of talking in hotel rooms can you take?
How many nights of limping around on pagan holidays?

I think probably just a reference to Murdoch and Privitera's early relationship in 2002/2003, during which Belle & Sebastian were traveling to perform at show around the world.

Oh, elope with me in private and we’ll set something ablaze
A trail for the devil to erase

Again a reference to "Pierrot le Fou", watch it to the end and it will make sense!

San Francisco’s calling us, the Giants and Mets will play
Piazza, New York catcher, are you straight or are you gay?

This has been covered by other posters. Worth mentioning that Piazza's press conference to deny rumors about his sexuality was held in May 2002, so relatively topical in terms of when this song was written.

We hung about the stadium, we’ve got no place to stay
We hung about the Tenderloin and tenderly you tell
About the saddest book you ever read, it always makes you cry
The statue’s crying too and well he may

So did Murdoch and Privitera actually go to San Francisco? I for one have no idea :) The lyrics in past tense party imply so, ("We hung around.."), but it's mixed with the present tense as if it's just an dream of what they would do whilst eloping ("tenderly you tell", "crying too").

Beside you and strong warnings in the guise of gentle words
Come wave upon me from the family wider net absurd
“You’ll take care of her, I know it, you will do a better job”
Maybe, but not what she deserves

This stanza is about Murdoch's new found love, but set against the backdrop of concerns about her being with him (and presumably the perils of leading the life of a successful musician).

I know it wouldn’t come to love, my heroine pretend
A lady stepping from the songs we love until this day
You’d settle for an epitaph like “Walk Away, Renee”

I think this is Murdoch showing some insecurity about how long the relationship may last, worried he would be heartbroken like Michael Brown (Walk Away Renee's writer).

Nick Drake – Strange Meeting Lyrics 18 years ago
In the new recording or this song, featured on the Family Tree album, Drake actually speaks about the song.

This song is so beautiful! Such simlicity in the song's structure, and lyrics that perfectly capture the changing of seasons. One of Drake's finest.

Beth Gibbons – Drake Lyrics 18 years ago
The time signiture of this song appears to be a nod to Drake's "River Man", but I had always assumed the song was about Drake too. It lyrics could be seen as portraying his relationship with Robin Frederick. She claims to have been in love with Drake, but never confessed it, and they parted ways. If she had, then his fate may have been different. In any case, everyone should check out her song about Drake, "Sandy Grey". It's possibly the most beautiful song ever written - I recommend it to fans of Out of Season.
