Rilo Kiley – A Man/Me/Then Jim Lyrics 17 years ago
Just a thought:
I think the Me is Diana, but Diana and Jenny are the same person. After one of the shows, I waited around to get Jenny's autograph and my name is Diane. When I told her my name, she said "Oh that's my middle name!" So I think possibly Jenny is the Diana Jim was in love with. Of course we can't be sure, but it's a nice thought.

Meg & Dia – Cardigan Weather Lyrics 18 years ago
My, oh, my
My alibi
Restore my faith in these
Words so clear
My failure dear
Lies tucked away in me

U guys are forgetting this part. The song is definitely about cheating, but also, there's the brilliant chorus. Theyre calling the cheater an alibi, like an excuse. And after she realizes hes an excuse, the failure of their relationship is on her because he probably wasnt worth her time anyway. Unfortunately, the failure is tucked away, meaning she probably has a weakness for crappy guys or making excuses. and the situation of catching the guy cheating has restored her faith in "these words", aka writing and making music. I think that def means it was such an experience that it inspired her to write and create.
Just my opinion

Firstly, Jenny says fuck like its spelled "phuck" and that is the most gratifying listening experience I've ever had.
Secondly, to me, this song is basically about growing up and getting real. Sadly, getting real sucks. The modern girl part brings to mind the fact that we have to conform to the age-old standard of work till you die. Mexico can fucking wait and the French films reminds me of commitments made or idealistic plans that now have to fucking wait cuz Jennys had it with that person, and also cuz of responsibilities.
I think the when you're dead is about the fact that when you get a job, you're dead. And Jenny is going to California cuz anything has got to be better than workin the 9 to 5.

Rilo Kiley – Science vs. Romance Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about the idea of God vs. the more realistic and material things on earth, such as science. You can rely on science more than you can rely on God in that you can reduce the scientific meaning of life to grids and binary code. When Jenny says "You go and call yourself the boss, but we're not robots inside a grid" calls to mind free-will. Im not a religious fanatic at all, but I think Jenny is defiantly saying to God, "You can kill people in crashes, but I still have science and free will". Jenny loves talking about God (see all of Rabbit Fur Coat)

Rilo Kiley – I Never Lyrics 18 years ago
The tenses in this song completely mind-fuck me. I think it's about how Jenny thought she would die until she met this great guy and then she knew true love. But I am pretty positive they aren't together anymore and it's an "I want and need you back song" cuz Im stuck on the proposition to buy a house, etc and the last lines "I have never loveD somebody, the way that I loveD you". Past tense! Wtf

I agree with the people who mentioned mental health issues.
I think the song is equally about depression and the difficulties of being held to higher standards by society, friends, spouses, parents, etc.
I think the line "when you loved things just because" deals equally with mental health and also, just having responsibilities. The showing up to work and all that follows is obviously about living up to external pressures to be all these great things, but those attributes are hollow because it's not real.
The part about the ship could be about overcoming depression or just overcoming the bullshit expectations. I think with RK, part of the battle is just realizing half of the characteristics attributed to you are bullshit, and thats a victory in and of itself.
