Thrice – Hold Fast Hope Lyrics 17 years ago
Im gonna spell the song out for everyone.
"How can you be sleeping? Waves like weapons crash. O'er us cry for mercy, and hold fast hope." - This line is directed at Jonah. There is an intense storm outside the ship, and a crew member is asking him how he can possibly be sleeping through it.

"Who of us is cursed, or do we have to ask
Search your souls and hold fast" - this line is directed at the entire crew of the ship, asking which one is cursed. They believe someone onboard is cursed and the storm is after them.

"If no one speaks a word, then let the lots be cast
Truth be told and hold fast" - If no one admits that they have done something wrong and that they are the cursed one, then they will draw lots (kinda like drawing straws). That will reveal who the cursed one is.

"White death wakes in black skies, mark your maker's wrath
Fear and flames of azure climb the crooked the mast
You will yet be baptized, steeped in shattered glass
Sink and sing your answer and hold fast hope" - This is all just imagery that is describibg the scene and the circumstances. White death = lightning. Flames of azure = waves. The mast is crooked because the storm is rocking the boat...etc.

"As strong arms grip your shoulders like dead hands of the past
Pray as you're tossed over, this breath could be your last
Quiet and cold, silent and slow
Night black as coal, miles here below" This is describing when the men toss jonah overboard.

"Find your faith and dive deep, through living gateways pass
Lined with death and ivory, and hold fast, hold fast
Deep beneath the black dawn, leagues from lightning's flash
Ribs will raise cathedrals for the morning mass
Steel yourself in sackcloth, roll your heart in ash
Scrape your skin with steel wool and hold fast hope
Cross your heart and hold fast hope" - This describes how jonah finds his faith in the belly of the fish. That fish is his cathedral, his church, as that is where he finds god. This whole thing is his mass.

Thrice – The Lion and the Wolf Lyrics 17 years ago
the lion and the wolf represent separate sins. typically i think the lion represents pride, and the wolf represents greed, but i don't think dustin wants to be specific in this song. I think hes just saying that sin leads to more sin, and it can devour you, whether that be an internal struggle with guilt, or dealing with social reprocussions, etc. This song is haunting, and I think its one of the darkest songs they've written.

Thrice – Child of Dust Lyrics 17 years ago
this song is very much from the point of view of the Earth, not god. The lines "supplied you not your spirit, but your shape," "child of dust to mother now return" suggest the existence of another provider or parent, which would be god, but that is seperate from whoever is singing the song. Dustin has stated that these sonnets are the elements personified, speaking to mankind.

lucas shane, the sonnets all end with the same melody to tie the project together. its a really cool, subtle way to make the connection between each element. as for this song (as well as all the other sonnets), i think dustin was being very literal with the elements speaking to mankind. Any other interpretation i think is valid, as it makes sense, but I don't think that was dustin's intention at all.

Thrice – Moving Mountains Lyrics 17 years ago
i think this song is about christians who lead moral lives, but not for the right reasons. Maybe they are doing it because they are afraid of hell, or because they were brought up that way, etc. Like, technically, they followed the rules to get into heaven, though they were never all that faithful.

Thrice – The Messenger Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the whole Fire album is kid of being misinterpreted because Dustins using the Old Testament for inspiration. Often the old testament is said to have a violent god, and one that is very unforgiving and cold. People say the book is filled with "fire and brimstone," which makes it perfect for using in the fire disc.

For this song, I think its just a testament to those who are willing to speak their beliefs in the face of persecution. Look at Copernicus who was executed for saying the earth revolved around the sun. This song references Isaiah because he's an example of this persecution. Dustin's taking the role of people like that. He seems to be admiring their courage and their determination.

Thrice – Lost Continent Lyrics 18 years ago
Yeah, but you gotta acknowledge the Atlantis references. I found this online - For generations the Atlanteans lived simple, virtuous lives. But slowly they began to change. Greed and power began to corrupt them. When Zeus saw the immorality of the Atlanteans he gathered the other gods to determine a suitable punishment.
Soon, in one violent surge it was gone. The island of Atlantis, its people, and its memory were swallowed by the sea.

Dustin is of course relating it to human nature and our times. Its just an observation that we are like the atlanteans, and we should use that tale as a warning against war, greed, and such. We should turn ourselves around and live the lives that we know we should.
