I feel like this song is all about being around 53rd st in NYC right around MoMA on a Friday afternoon.
"You waited since lunch"
The MoMA is open to public free of charge on Fridays, but only after lunch hour and the line to get inside always stretches around the corner of the block.
I think the thousand little Julias are the typical artsy girls that fancy such afternoons at the MoMA. They mirror one another -- they're all (more or less) lookalikes.
I think m985916 got all the other references correct. It's basically about these people trotting around Midtown with naive, wondrous thoughts (I'm not describing this in a negative way). |

I'm not too sure about the meaning behind this song, but I suspect that the first verse is about heroin (as many of KD's songs tend to be about drugs). "pins through the pavement"... needle through black tar heroin maybe?
Then the second verse could be about just stealing money and spending it on booze. Again, not 100% sure. He may have been doing this while his brother Michael (now deceased) was "digging his own grave"...
And the last verse I've yet to contemplate, but this is one of my fave songs from him so I'll keep trying :) |

I agree with the above comment totally. I should also add that the lines about Daniel's friend going to war is less about politics and more about a bigger picture, which is that there are problems far greater than his "own shit", and he knows it. He acknowledges them, and it definitely makes him sad...but he forgets all that once he's back to his old 'pattern' of drinking and self-pity again and again. |

I think it's about doing coke and heroin on his birthday with his friends. And once they're gone, he's there left all alone and wondering about his friends and his lifestyle. He knows he's not leading any sort of glorious lifestyle (obviously, since he's getting drugged up on his bday), but he also feels that he has the ability to phase the whole thing out and better himself one day. One day, but for now it's all ok.
