| Tori Amos – Roosterspur Bridge Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Once upon a time man and woman were united in one being. Then they were divided. So sometimes they build bridges. But the distance between them became farther and farther apart. So they sing songs of wonder. |

True. There were no demos made for this song. Whatever you hear in the record was the first time she ever played it. It was that raw. "Blubber in my igloo" for me I guess is a metaphor for something that gives warmth in a place that is perennially cold (blubber being whale fat, igloo being structure made of snow). |

| Sarah McLachlan – Adia Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Another form of soliloquy and I must say that the axe of the most introspective female singer-songwriters of the 90s is empathy. There's a thing about these songwriters that even if they talk about (or rather, talk TO) their own selves in the form of a third person (usually with a female name, ofcourse) emanates their experiences, pysche and emotions, the songs still come up very engaging, generous and healing. I just love how a different sonic approach expresses another emotional story to the same situation. Understanding her work for the past two decades, you'd see that she does work well balancing the divisions within herself (her "Girls"), and there is always room for each Girl to be expressed, to have a voice. Yes, the "ooh's" does sound like the heart breaking. I guess in heart break, there is a point when all your divisions mourn in unison. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_swan_theory I'm just grateful how she makes it easy for us: translating philosophical concepts to the personal language of the heart. We're practically spoiled. |

| Chicane – Autumn Tactics Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Ending summers in Puerto Galera back in its virgin state when you could still camp by the beach and there was only one local tranny tending the only bar by the beach. Big thoughts and the starry humid sky in poor man's Bora, we knew we were young and there wasn't much time before we'd actually discover ourselves. We were scared as shit, but at least we did get to enjoy the sun before it became a sport or a fashion. I appreciate Mac playing this song during the drive home. What a way to mark the end of the sun. | |

| Björk – Aurora Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
A lost divine feminine perspective: "Treading the glacier head Looking hard for moments of shine From twilight to twilight" Glacier head - Tip of the iceberg, connotes a deep inner world beyond the surface of the physical/superficial/material world. Twilight to twilight - Dark. Hidden. Only through the hidden/dark places can we fully appreciate light. A mountain shade - man's struggle for spirituality/spiritual perfection/highest good I wish to melt into you - total acknowledgement of our nature/going back to nature. Aurora - various connotations: the Northern Lights; enlightenment; nature goddess; a divine feminine sensibility (Listen to Tori Amos' Amber Waves for another metaphorical representation of the Northern Lights similar to this one) Spark the sun off - glimmers of nature-centric sensibility balance and heals "the suffer" (the sins of the fathers) Just a point of view. |

| Björk – Bachelorette Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I'm almost quite there, but not there yet. I know in my own forest there's a book. I don't know if I could find it, if I should, if I'd want to. There's a part of me that sings with Isobel. Wants to stay with Isobel. Bachelorette scares me a lot. A LOT. Because I don't know if I could handle inner truths, some truths for that matter. Like most of Bjorks songs, this one speaks about the inner world. |

| Tori Amos – Marianne Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
i once knew a person who hated soliloquys. and i thought, "how come? when every possible thought we have is one" i guess for me the most painful form of soliloquy is when we try to talk with that child within us, and discover that we're not sure if he/she died. and i knew you... |

| Natalie Merchant – Ophelia Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think this is Natalie's little commentary or reclaiming of the feminine sensibility in our period. I'm a Pacific Islander, and unfortunately, these dualistic concepts (masculine/feminine, Adam/Eve, positive/negative) are not inherent to more organic, abstract, spherical (as opposed to cubic) cultures. Hey, we don't even have an exact translation for "wife" or "husband", it's just spouse, ungendered. From a third party's point of view, there's a great divide between the masculine and the feminine in the West, having a long overdue power struggle causing imbalance to a much higher/greater sensibility (or God perhaps). I guess it is deeply rooted and it's just sad that the feminine sensibility has to transcend to the shadows ("Ophelia's mind went wandering/ You'd wonder where she'd gone/ Through secret doors down corridors/ She wanders them alone"), as a result of this struggle. But I think Natalie (or even Shakespeare) is hopeful. Otherwise, why bother with Ophelia or Hamlet, right? |

| Natalie Merchant – Beloved Wife Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
It's the simplest and probably the most important song about grief that I've heard. You don't necessarily have to have lost a loved-one to sickness to relate to this song. It may be as well grieving the death of your relationship. Been 5 months and I'm never the same again. |

| Damien Rice – The Blower's Daughter Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
It hurts to hear this song. I just don't understand where the last line "Til I find somebody new" is coming from. It doesn't seem to be part of the song. Specially when he just almost whispers it upon fading like he didn't really wanna say it but it just needed to come out. Was it retaliation? Is he being zealous in his apology? Or a final denial, which means he never really got to a resolve. Whatever it is, other than that final line, painful painful song. |

| Beth Orton – Thinking About Tomorrow Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is so brilliant it's tough to make an interpretation without being metaphorical. With all the contradictions she has of herself (I've been waiting for you, Nothing can save me from you)the song teaches a thing or two about balance: between heart and soul, theory and method, insanity and sobriety, talking and walking. I'm amazed how she recognizes her demons (Bye, my friends so long), but I'm dumbfounded how she manages to make a resolve on an emotional level that few of us ever achieve. |
