Red Hot Chili Peppers – Soul to Squeeze Lyrics 18 years ago
having "been there, done that" i say the song is about drug addiction.

" Where I go I just don't know
I got to, got to, gotta take it slow
When I find my piece of mind
I'm gonna give you some of my good time"

Wow. that says a lot.

Neil Young – When God Made Me Lyrics 18 years ago
NOTE UP FRONT: From a Christian perspective:

When he sings it, you can see and hear his inner torment. A lot of folks say that he is bashing religion, and that this an anti-Christian song – but I think he really is asking questions, and trying to make sense of what goes on in the world from a man-in-the-world perspective. A man who is deeply spiritual, with no answers, just questions.

Although Neil is not a Christian (to my knowledge) I don’t take it as bashing. It is only right to have questions. God wants us to worship Him out of our own free will, not just follow others blindly to church with no thought given to what it is we do. That’s not worship at all. Using our minds and hearts to ask these questions, and still, knowing that although we don’t have the answers, trust in Him to know that He has plans that are simply beyond our understanding – that’s worship.

The questions he asks are valid ones, and the reason many doubt or don't believe at all. These very types of questions are what makes evangilism tough, and the reason that the great majority of the evangalising I do is by example, not by shootin off at the mouth.

A great, powerful, song.

Jack Johnson – Good People Lyrics 18 years ago
This song embodies my frustration. I don't have cable, 'cause its mostly garbage, but even "standard" TV is almost all useless.

Just watching the news, try to keep up with what's in the world - you hear more about Britney and OJ than you do our nations leaders! Watch a fanily show with your kids, and all's well - then the commercials are ads for Victoria's Secret and axe murder movies - GAKKK! Sporting events - same ads, plus wardrobe malfunctions.

Where DID all the good people go?

Keep it up Jack!

Jack Johnson – Breakdown Lyrics 18 years ago
This entire song is a gut punch. I was homeless as a youth, and have been able to overcome that in my adult life. I have a home and a family, and help my church provide for those in need as much as I can.

In my effort to make sure that others, especially my son, never have to experience my childhood, I ride that damned train every day. It's all too rare that I get time to stop and enjoy my surroundings. I was able to spend a few hours with my guitar, sitting on a rock by a lake, a few weeks ago, and I literally cried.

The wisdom is, indeed, not in the glass windows - but this stands out to me:

". . . and i got no time
that i got to get to
where i don't need to be"

I mean, really - how much time do we waste in an occupation, busting hump for a bunch of ingrates, making the fat people of America a little less miserable, instead of actually doing something worthwhile? Please, don't answer. I'm getting depressed enough . . .

Powerful, powerful song. The simplicity just adds to its genius.
