This is my take on it: After listening to "Got Jealous" it's clear that he's in love with a woman who is taken by another man. In "Got Jealous" he plainly states that he has thoughts of killing this woman's man because he's insanely jealous. At the end of the song, you can hear him pouring his heart out to this girl ... basically begging her to let him know where they stand. Should he keep hope alive, or should he just move on? Now, skip to the very next song, "Pandora," and we see that the relationship between him and this woman does continue. His hope that they could be together is kept alive. Now, let's go back to "Got Jealous" for a second. He must have expressed to this woman that he couldn't be around them because seeing them together made him crazy - "If I don't get out of here, I'm gonna kill someone ..." She must have expressed that the thought of him killing her man "bothered" her and must have told him not to do it. Now, let's go back to "Pandora." When she lets him into her window that night, he can see something is bothering her. He asks her if something is wrong and she tells him no. She is knowingly about to trap him. They sleep together and she tells him that she wants him to come inside her -- leading him to believe that HE is who she is choosing. Then, when the deed is done, she casually says, "oh by the way, that thing before that bothered me (him wanting to kill her man) doesn't anymore." Now all of a sudden she wants him to kill her man (now husband?) -- for insurance money, perhaps? He catches on, and is clearly not OK with this plan. He turns to leave and that's when she blackmails him -- if he doesn't do it, she will claim he raped her. That's when it hits him ... she is just using him. She never really chose him over her this other guy. She knew how much she meant to him and figured "hey, this guy will do anything for me" - even if that "anything" involved killing her husband to get him out of the picture. His whole world comes crashing down around him right then and there. Not only did this revelation cause this life he had pictured with this woman to vanish into thin air, but it also caused his future as a whole to vanish as well -- All hope is gone ... All hope is lost. On a side note ... maybe in "Got Jealous" she wasn't married to this other man yet. That's why she wasn't OK with him wanting to kill him (she wouldn't get anything out of it). Perhaps "Pandora" takes place a year or so later ... when she's married to this guy. Now, if he dies, she's entitled to his life insurance policy. Hmm, it's possible, because why else would she all of a sudden change her mind and be OK with someone killing her man? Anyway, that's my take on the song. |

OK, I was somewhat wrong. It is not entirely about self reflection (i.e., him singing to the side of himself that he hates). He's actually singing about a person he hates. However, he realizes that there's a little of that person in him. From a live show - (J's intro to the song) "This is a little reminder that no matter how badly you hate somebody there's always something in you that's a little like them." |

| I've spent a lot of time with this song. It's actually one of my favorites off of the album. I get the feeling that in this song J. is speaking about himself. Through reflection he has given himself the title of Poor Role Martyr-X. | |

I think this song is about a girl he loved/still loves but she won't be with him because of religious beliefs -- maybe he's not "pure" enough for her -- that's why he says "so it finally dawned on me, yesterday morning, i just can't stare, and swallow the words, that your hero's perverted on what we share ..." (her hero being God, and their love being a 'sin' are the words he's perverted) then the line "you love him, so much, and he still wont care, to see your face, with an empty smile, cause i touched [that] place on you, and all the while..." (she loves God, and does things to please him, but because she loves the singer and maybe they "touched" which made her feel shameful about herself and now she looks at him with an "empty smile")... then when you look back at the opening lines it all makes sense -- "You want him, you need him (Singer), It's so hard to please him (God), You just don't dare, And inside you're burning, with some secret yearnings (to be with him-singer), you must not care (about the singers love for her), Still won't you help me, I'm flawed, desperate, angry with God, cause he just won't care ..." (He-singer-wants this, but can't have it and is angry that "God" would deem love a "sin") ... eh, that's my take on it. Sorry is this is all jumbled ... just typing as I think it. |
