Coldplay – A Spell a Rebel Yell Lyrics 16 years ago
Hey just to play the devil's advocate (DA) here: maybe he just wants better rotation on patrols to war bound nations, in any case as an English singer he doesn't have a say (read: vote) in the politics side of American policy, though one might argue that his influence is greater than most in the department.

Also, a DA moment, what do we do with the people who return and are then unemployed an unable to support their families. Especially in a time when it is difficult for people to get jobs. Might be a barrel of worms there but makes me say hmmmmm

Another thought, what if "spell" means a period of time.

Another thought provoker, where does Hollywood go if war ends? Most action movies are based on conflicts of some sort, whether in full war or not.

One more, what does a sacrifice mean if there is no place to make a sacrifice, whether that is of time, money, blood, sweat, or lives?

Cartel – Retrograde Lyrics 16 years ago
Yes, jenshack21, great line there. This song is very Jimmy Eat World. drawing various aspects into relatability but remaining more vague like cartel always does.

I love the chorus which is "I'm under arrest" not rain. and how it builds a foundation of failure before delivering the main line. "An undecided heart makes such a mess"

Their undefined lyrics also let it be applied in other methods, try thinking of that line from the point of view of a relationship, a job search, a life purpose, a faith. Then apply to the rest of the song. I love it.

Switchfoot – Mess of Me Lyrics 16 years ago
Well, unfortunately davideskimo you're way off the mark, loona you're getting close. This has nothin to do with pharmaceuticals. The drug is whatever takes you away. Switchfoot is a deeply christian band and that is reflected in most of Foreman's lyrics, in theme form.

This song is about how everyone takes themselves away from God. And How foreman want to live the right way for the rest of his time, though there is nothing there is nothing you can buy to fix that break from the almighty.

Some cool references: 1.) The blind leading the blind. "It's hard to free the ones you love Oh, when you can't forgive yourself." just as Jesus spoke about it. Matthew 7:3-5, 2.)"The rest of my life alive": John 6:47, 3.) "Reverse this tragedy" Man's fall from grace has been described as the first tragedy, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_fall_from_grace he could be alluding to reversing that by becoming one with the Father again.

Brand New – Fork and Knife Lyrics 17 years ago
It is definately Reparate. as in to make reparations. it makes sense if it is used in that context.

"For the time to come and reparate"

Interpretation: It's about Christianity. The romeo and juliet doesn't hold water it is based solely off one verse.

The first verse talks about the second coming of christ and atoning for our wrongs. Look up dowry: it is what a wife will bring to her husband at marriage, but she doesn't get until then either. so jesse is saying "We are awaiting what we have already but need to bring to our husband." Often Jesus refers to himself as the bridegroom, or "husband." The church is referred to as the wife. Jesus saw everyone as the church so we are all the wife. Thanks laurel for drawing that connection to the song title in both of jesse's meanings, there is no way he did that unintentionally.

There are christian reference all throughout this song, throughout the entire DAGARIM, and in both Deja and YFW. I can explain most of the lyrics along this line, but I'm not going to cause that would take too long.

UDynasty, I think you are wrong, no offense intended but jesse hasn't seriously commented on politics in his lyrics yet, and this isn't the beginning of that. But he has seriously written on faith discussions repeatedly.

Brand New – The Archers Bows Have Broken Lyrics 18 years ago
1. Damien lanier, Thank you so much, that is exactly as i feel. The entire cd is a "discussion" of religion, faith, God, and how it all relates to the narrarator, in this case Jesse. From Jesus Christ

My high school English teacher, a devout atheist, recommended that everyone have read the bible at some point if they are ever serious about understanding much of anything ever written. Because of that reading you would be able to pick out so many references in Jesse's lyrics. This song has NOTHING to do with politics, well nothing to do with Bush per say. This song has everything to do with evangelical Christians and how they live. Also, it isn't so much about the hypocriticality of said Christians, though it is mentioned, it is about how the faith isn't real to so many people.

P.S. the whole CD is like that. so lets get the discussion a little more accurately on topic.

Jimmy Eat World – Dizzy Lyrics 18 years ago
I just want to say that for this song everyone has said great things so far. sometimes people's ideas are so far off it gets ridiculous, but this song is pretty on the mark.

Lyrics:
First of all: letlovein's last lyrics are closest, except

second line is "notice" instead of know this.

And it is "Some honesty" in the chorus.

Your first your last your only

finally: Jesus is there someone yet, who got that wish?
Did you get yours babe?

Interpretation Time:
"letlovein" you have said a lot and it's good, I think you are adding in extra context that isn't there though.
What do we know?
1) Guy and girl, (we know this from the use of "babe" and possibly "Girl" (Girl, back away to the safety...)

2) JEW is from guy side.

3) they have a past ("why'd we both choose letting go")
use of past tense.

those are the hard facts. the rest is a revolving dialogue by the writer concerning said past.
Some is posed to the girl, some is questions in his own mind, some is directed elsewhere (e.g. jesus)

Songs might be a story about personal situations from a band but they mean different things to different people: that is why they are art. So here is my guess as to some of the meanings within and you can take the story that you want from it.

Verse1: guy notice, believe me they do, when affection is going elsewhere. even if there is no longer a romantic tie. Discussing with himself the end of the relationship/friendship.

Verse2:Jumping from relationship to relationship.
"If you really knew how the others felt, yo would be sick/need to sit down/etc. what ever you feel dizziness means.

Chorus: "Do you know what you are saying, be honest with me. I'm going home, you can't deny the love/hate/connection. I would love to say love but sometimes the songs don't mean that.

Verse3: pretty straight forward. I think it is reminiscing from the past. if there is something left in this, don't let me walk out on it.

verse4: (my favorite verse)
I tried, but it rang and rang, I called all night
On a pay phone, remember those from another life?
If everything I meant to you,
You can't lick and seal then fold in two
Then I've been so blind.

"I tried to call you," JEW brought so much context and picture to this event, i love it.

Here is where I will extrapolate: Often someone might write in the breakup letter, "You mean more to me than you can possibly know" or any number of variations. It was sealed in an envelope and then folded in two, again such great visualization. I've been so blind. He was in deeper than she was and was, apparently, wrong.

Bridge P1: Take back all of what you said to be because i was wrong about you I don't want it now. If you've ever broken up with someone, then you might have experienced that cut off feeling, that hole in your heart, that knot in your stomach. This might be what he is talking about, I think so.

Bridge P2: most of it is self explanatory, but... second line, think about it this way, clock-stopping shot, basketball analogy, maybe a game ender, one last chance, a hail mary, not sure, take what you will, then my second favorite part. "jesus is there someone yet" I don't think he is really reaching out to jesus, i think he is saying that there isn't a person who has no regrets. again visually done.

that is all. I hope i am not too much of a hypocrite
