Cake – The Distance Lyrics 17 years ago
actually missprotein i believe you've missed the point of SongMEANINGS.com like the millions of other blundering idiots on here who understand poetry and 'between the lines' reading at a preteen level. illuminator4tards's username approch to this site is appropriate and he has made a great contribution in decrypting what i would think to have been a 'lite' song.

Admittedly i still read this song in its literal text. But while this song describes cars, or racing in general the central theme of this song is already given away in the title "The Distance", being about uncompromised effort, struggle and achievement. Themes of personal and emotional struggle are evident aswell with the "girl being alone in her time of need" and "the man still hugging the turns after sundown and moonup with the cup competition long over". Fantastic instrumentation aswell. As i read this song literally and illuminator4tards has already beat me to it, i'll restrain from givina an indepth analysis. The main point in this post is actually to defend an intellect from the blunderin idiot masses.

Regardless i still love the idea of doing hill runs to this song!

En Vogue – Don't Let Go (Love) Lyrics 17 years ago
A Man's Secret Shame Song (One that he'll like but will never admit it for fear of persecution). I for one will say Don't Let Go is a 90's classic, a embodiment of RnB's better times with a sensual backing and guitar; moving rhythm, mood and emotion.

Video clip is loaded with relics of the 80's/turn of the decade styling.

Song meaning is pretty straight forward with no bits needing interpreting.

Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight Lyrics 18 years ago
SYNOPSIS
Taking into account of Phil Collins' own quote about the ambiguity over the direct meaning of his own song, i would have to agree wholeheartedly with him where this is not a song to be taken literally but is rather an exploration into the artist's own psyche, an emotional time capsule over the events in his own life.

MELODIC ATMOSPHERE/CHORUS
This song encompasses the unprocessed emotions (face value) of the destruction of a long-term relationship evident through the lyrics written where the author was not in a clear and logical/mature mindstate. This is evident through the tones of restrained anger in the musical environment; when this is coupled with the chorus, it communicates an emotionally raw and vindictive tone to the song where you can 'feel it in the air' and the writer has illogically been waiting for this crisis all his life.

STANZA PSYCHE
The song is partitioned into two stanzas of what i would call, inverse order, further supporting the argument this song is more about the emotional psyche of Phil Collins through metaphors rather than a story about criminal neglect. The first stanza alludes towards an emotional response to a discovery of the significant other's true nature described in the second paragraph (hence inverse ordered stanzas). Therefore it makes sense to interpret the song from second to first stanza.

SECOND STANZA
The second stanza describes the realisation of the true nature of a person where an intimate bond was initially formed through an emotionally biased perception, such as a wife. Collins’ describes this when he states he 'remembers' the first and last time the partners ever met. This is a metaphor describing the realisation that the initial perception of the partner was incorrect, where you meet the 'real' and in this case, ugly side of a person for the first time making it the last time the two meet. When two people who have held an intimate bond break up, be it best friends or lovers, there tends to be a silent standoff where both parties despise each other's presence, hence the reason for the painful silence that grows, that is no stranger to either party. This then leads more logically towards the first stanza, action response to this emotional discovery.

STANZA ONE
Upon the realisation that their relationship has been 'all a pack of lies' as alluded towards in the second verse, the author then responds lyrically with emotional resentment and vindication as evident through the use of metaphors in the first verse. This is apparent when Collins' states that he would not help if the significant other told him 'she' was drowning. While both have physically known each other for a long time and would recognise each others face, the writer then suggests in accord with the second verse that the antagonist may not know the author anymore. While i have not researched the divorce of Collins and his wife the remainder of the this verse points toward the author's discovery of his partner's unfaithfulness where he sees with his own two eyes what she did and comes the emotional reaction that their relationship has been a pack of lies(and also ties into the second verse).

CONCLUSION
From the analysis of the song couples with elementary research into the creation of this song, i'm willing to conclude this piece descibes the emotional mindstate of Phil Collins' in the timeframe of his divorce as seen through the evidence provided in previous paragraphs rather than a song taken literally over criminal neglect via manslaughter/murder/assault etc etc..

I hope this has helped people further their understanding of the lyrics in this song, even I have come to many realisations even while writing this interpretation. A lyrical, organisational and aural masterpiece considering the technology employed in its production.
