It's kind of like what petecb said but its not about govt, just religion. The kind that says "follow the rules (that we make) or else you'll go to hell, bad things are gonna happen to you." Don't know where the government factor came in, but other than that refer to the lines petecb referenced. |

| Modest Mouse – Race Car Grin You Ain't No Landmark Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I'm guessing it's just a story about a man who lost all his money and has fallen on hard times(first four lines) and he wasted his last dollars on a desperate gamble at the track (next four lines). Now he's just gone insane, with a crazy smile, giving up and not caring about life. | |

what the hell is everyone talking about? Remember how THEY vowed to let that go If your families paid the ransom Well, I think you both should know That that's not THEIR intention But I will help to set you free ... Desire a part in OUR scheme ... Hurry before it's too late for US to escape The narrator OBVIOUSLY isn't the kidnapper. Why would he have a detailed escape route? Why tell them to hurry? Why say "they" then switch to "us" if he is a kidnapper? He snuck in and is going to rescue them in exchange for a job. |

I agree with the idea of Brock actually being sarcastic when he sings this. It could be like a person, or an ideal, that everyone thinks is so great, but actually just helps dig your own grave. Also, not every song is about some sort of romance... and its annoying when everyone just decides it is. I guess this MIGHT have merit to be interpreted this way, but most other songs that are obviously unrelated always seem to find idiots who concentrate on a few words to find a lost love in the meaning, Once again to emphasize this song is NOT necessarily about lost romance and has many other possibilities |

| I haven't really looked at it but it seems pretty obvious its about the use of email and instant messaging and this site (how ironic) and the such; that its ruining our ability to express ourselves and that whole argument. | |

"because of this girl he's in love with." .. jesus fucking christ.. how is it that people can come to the most random conclusions in lyrics that hint nothing of the topic. It seems like everyone always looks for romance to be the first meaning in every song, and they stick to that principle until it becomes painfully obvious it is not about romance. What part of this would make you think that its about a girl that he has found happiness with? It's about happiness, but why come to the conclusion its about romance? The closest thing that could possibly be related would be "You hit me so hard"; that should not enough to make one think someone is enraptured with a girl. And apparently it would seem that is completely wrong; as someone said before, it just came to KB. My exasperation is because I see this kind of analysis for tons of songs. Not every fucking song is about romance, we already have enough of those in the world, stop making up stupid meanings. |

2 words that sum this song up are Fahrenheit 451. Its pretty much about the limiting of thought in a fascist controlled government. "In view of wan wordless crowds that chase waifs to spires with fiery plumes" To paraphrase, it is saying that emotionless/wordless crowds chase the homeless/abandoned into burning buildings, fitting the picture of a burning in styx, the fiery river of hell. And all the while it gives the weaker class of people(the impotents) thrills of power of these poor people. Boredom symbolizes the unthinking minds of people, which allows the crimes of the nation to go unnoticed, like all the wars in Fahrenheit 451. "Boredom strangles the life from the printed page" could be an allusion to the book. Myopic also means narrow minded, and the myopic mirror reflects the narrow minded thoughts right back at the people. When he sees face to face with the moon, it is a possible allusion to the old fable of the moons reflection in the water, and the fox thinks not of this possibility, but that it is an actual object, cheese. The narrator sees beyond the myopic mirror, beyond the reflection, and sees the moon for what it is, and not what the mirror says it is. But like montague in F451, the people around him are following the governments words while he tries to persuade them to think for themselves, " Why do I always have to tell you ”forget about the precient signs!”?" opposed to following the government. He pleads at the end that we stick to things we love, and never fall into this system to the extent. |

| Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #2 (Laika) Lyrics | 18 years ago |

It seems the lyrics are in the point of view of a child (saying daddy) seeing his older brother. The brother is the typical "bad seed" of the family and does crimes and such. He abandons his family with the typical yearning for emancipation, saying that he hates his family, etc., shown with the torn up photos and crossed out names. The second stanza seems to imply that he does have the hidden feelings of compassion for family and the need for love as well. The narrator seems to be willing Alex to come forward(Come on Alex, you can do it/ Come on Alex, there's nothing to it), but Alex seems to keep those true feelings within(If you want something, don't ask for nothing) while he continues being a bad person, saying he "just wants to visit" while asking for "favors" like money(If you want nothing, don't ask for something). When Alex is bit by the vampire, it is a symbol of the violence and "exotic" places hes been on his journey away from the family. He seems to have come back injured, all the while living off his parents(For a year we caught his tears in a cup) with nowhere to go. The family, in the meantime continues to impress upon Alex about the bad lifestyles through examples of the past, especially the cause of his return(And now we're going to make him drink it). Alex also seems to have especially bad relations with his father, fighting when the father comes home. I think the father has given up hope and tolerance of bad behavior and responds angrily to Alex, causing a fight. I think that the mother reminds Alex about starting a good life, but never shouts and stays resigned, only wishing. And the younger brothers are quiet about it all, because they are too young and are too scared to talk to Alex about it, and don't want to take sides against their older brother. Alex is probably one of the siblings who is caring to his siblings, but will ignore them if he does not feel like talking to them. But the brothers' heads, they agree with the parents as shown in the lyrics of the song, which I think are the thoughts, but not the words of a younger brother. The narrator sees the trouble his brother is in with police and crime, and wills his brother to be good with the sort of yelling voice the singer uses as he sings the verses. He also seems to take lines from the grown ups ("It's for your own good/ the neighborhood"). This is what I make of it. It's pretty cool how it can make me form an entire story with only a few words. |
