| Pretty Girls Make Graves – Pyrite Pedestal Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
A note about the title: pyrite is more commonly known as "fool's gold" - something that initially appears to look like gold (therefore incredibly valuable), but, on closer inspection, is in fact worthless. A pedestal is obviously the base of a statue or vase (again, an incredibly valuable object - a work of art). However, it is also used as a metaphor for holding someone in high esteem. So, combining the two words - "pyrite" and "pedestal" - we encounter a contradiction. There is firstly this idea of a worthless object that initially seems to be valuable, and then there is the pedestal, which has connotations of value, respect, adoration, even love. Together, they definitely do create the idea of a dysfunctional relationship, one that has grown stale. |
