I think the legend part is in reference to the way many brilliant composers were tormented by their own genius. This person she wants to trust thinks being a tortured artist is glamorous, that only good can come of it, but really it's exactly what it says it is: torture. There's a story about a girl who cried a whole sea of tears, and drowned herself in her own sadness. I think the swallow bit is somehow related to that. I also kind of agree that it's in part about an authority figure, like a parent or a manager. |

I think this song is about Bruce and Free's relationship as songwriters. Zerospace is a metaphorical plane where their thoughts run parallel and they create something that's greater than the sum of its parts. But, for whatever reason, they occasionally fall out of the space, and that's where creative conflicts arise. She both hates and loves the experience of writing with another person. Or she could have just been on a lot of E when she wrote it, who knows. |
