| Nada Surf – Blizzard of '77 Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Yes, it's about the Buffalo blizzard of '77. For me, the song uses a blizzard as a metaphor for our own lives, that we're not always in control, we worry about things we can't control (like the weather, people we love). We can dwell on the negative (are flowers just pretty weeds?), or we can admit our losses and move on. We have to be positive and let go. But our emotions aren't so easy to control. Storms come, fear returns, and we think about one we miss in the half-light. "But in the middle of the night I worry Its blurry even without light"... I think this refers to how light is caught by swirling snow during a blizzard, so that you can see a ways into the darkness even at night. A very romantic image. providing a beautiful stage for worrying about the storm, grieving about someone you miss. Every song should be this song... |

| Sea Wolf – You're A Wolf Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Halloween reminded me of the 1941 "Wolf Man" movie, in which an old gypsy woman can seen the cursed man's fate in his palm. She tells him the curse can only be removed by a silver bullet from his true love. Which leads me to... The "gypsy woman" is his disillusioned lover. She can see into his true wandering, lone-wolf ways. She knows she is not his true love and tells him so after some dutch courage. So he moves on, looking to remove the curse of the loveless. For me, the stream refers to tracking. Somebody (a werewolf/selfish lover) on the run from tracking hounds (angry ex/their conscience) would walk down the middle of a stream to break their scent and footprint trail. I agree that the stream merging with river/ocean is a desire for oblivion, a leaving behind of a cursed fate. But he's running low. It's tough to outrun fate. Of course, the song is probably about cuddling with kittens. Everybody loves cuddling with kittens! I'm going out to find a kitten to cuddle with right now! A perfect song. |

| Metric – Empty Lyrics | 18 years ago |

A perfect song. Metric precision. For me, the song references heroin addiction. Terms like fixing, sickness, straight from the junkie dictionary. "The damage is done...", as in "The Needle and the Damage Done." Fixing, getting sick in a bathroom stall, maybe at a rock show. Once the sickness passes, time to head out to the dance floor and shake your empty head! Wheee! The bulimia association works too. Very similar, junkies and bulimics tend to be emotional islands, severe attachment disorders from childhood trauma being prominent. The only way out from their emotional pain is to give into bingeing/purging--injecting/getting junk sick. No one in either illness could see the devestastion coming. A little leads to alot. And the bit where there's always one person awake--that's how shooting up works (ideally...). Somebody needs to stay up to make sure the others aren't od-ing. Of course, the song will probably turn out to be about a trip to London or something... |
