My take on the song was the singer was returning home from a period behind bars, to his crew of fellow tweakers hangers on...The opening line, "when I receive the blessing I've got coming," struck me as sardonic.....The song as a whole seems emotionally complex...Because beneath the sardonic crust is real hope, desperate hope..... |

Every line in this song is about meth addiction, and the tweaker life. The headstones climbing up the hills are hallucinations caused by meth and sleep deprivation. "Comb the carpet for clues," is about carpet surfing, tweakers crawling around on all fours searching for chunks of meth that have been accidentally dropped. Tweakers will do this for hours at times. The reflective tape on their pants and holes in their shoes, those things just sort of happen over time. Little by little, day by day, week by week you atrophy in every way....everything starts to die. Horrible things become funny...Insanity becomes the norm. This song brilliantly captures that world. A world I left a few years back. |
