I love this song. Dunno exactly how Illinois relates to the bittersweet kind of love story depicted in the rest of the song, other than the band is from there and whatever experiences they are referring to ("the water where we kissed", etc.) took place there. Can't help singing along to the chorus. |

I really like this song musically, but the chorus is a little bland and much of the verses seems like nonsense, especially the jumbled-together words (even if taken individually). Anyone have insight to offer on "whiskeymouthbottleneckcardstack", etc? |

An interesting counterpoint to the majority of the comments on this entire site. I agree that it's not really one of Idlewild's best songs musically, but it definitely makes you think. |

This song has been in my head a lot lately. I always thought it was "I earn till I buy you then you fall asleep", but maybe the way it's written here makes more sense. As for the meaning, I agree that it's about the speaker's girlfriend cheating on him, and how he will never be able to really forget it ("nothing cleans...evidence"). It's pretty cool how dark and ominous the song comes across despite the fact that it's in a major key. |

Great song, clearly about a friend's suicide and how the speaker is dealing with it. But according to iTunes the correct title is "When the Pin Hits the Shell"...is there a way to edit the title of the song posted here? |

Anyone know who is speaking the line "Jesus is knocking on the door of your heart today" (sounds like a sample) during the last verse, or how it ties in to the rest of the song? |

Yeah I just rediscovered this song after about 10 years, as I've gotten more interested in the rest of 7M3's music since American Standard. A lot of their lyrics are opaque and not easy to interpret definitively. I don't think this song is about suicide. I believe it's more about just losing control of yourself in general and "acting out" foolishly. One question: what's up with the words slammed together in several places? Is that how it's written in the album jacket, or just typos? |
