Sufjan Stevens – Springfield, or Bobby Got a Shadfly Caught in His Hair Lyrics 18 years ago
alright, while this song is amazing and i absolutely love it, the only part i could pay attention to was this:
"bobby, don't look back"

ignoring the rest of the song, this felt like a bit of an allusion to bob dylan. i'm probably wrong, but still, if it was, it's the coolest part.

Fall Out Boy – This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race Lyrics 18 years ago
Fall Out Boy is no different then any other band of their lot: generally untalented, horrible lyricists and equipped with a bass player that makes me want to gauge my own eyes out. That said, I DO like working out to this song and have had time to listen to the lyrics while doing just that and unlike Wentz' usual ramblings, this song actually does have meaning, I interpreted it as such:

Fall Out Boy used to be one of the smaller bands of the pop punk genre (they once opened on tour for Mest, and Mest was an opener band themselves), however, they had a very loyal following who liked wearing black clothes and had nappy pink streaks in their hair blahblah. Somehow (I don't know how, I don't want to know how) Fall Out Boy got super popular with the masses of brain dead adolescents and fore-mentioned black-clothes-pink-streak teenagers were angry at this. In response, Fall Out Boy is saying, we're just making music for whoever, so shut up.

A noble statement I suppose, but it doesn't change the fact that I want them to get off the student radio.

The Decemberists – The Infanta Lyrics 18 years ago
This most likely has already been said, but I figured I'd provide a quick and easy definition for Infanta:

according to my dictionary:
in.fan.ta
noun - historical
A daughter of the ruling monarch of Spain or Portugal, esp. the eldest daughter who was not heir to the throne.

The Decemberists – The Island: Come and See; The Landlord's Daughter; You'll Not Feel the Drowning Lyrics 18 years ago
...well. As lovely as this song is, I'm a bit disappointed with the analysis' I've been reading. I was under the impression that the entire Crane Wife album was based on the Japanese folk tale, the Crane Wife. So, if anything, wouldn't this song be a reflection of that story? Maybe I'm wrong. Whatever.

Pink – U + Ur Hand Lyrics 18 years ago
Honestly? I hate pop music. I haven't listened to the radio in 5 years because the music on the stations is ALWAYS so detestable that I cannot stand it, so the fact that I heard this song was purely by chance, and I was pleasantly surprised! I've never been one for "girl power" (it's rather corny, though the riot grrl genre is an interesting on), and P!nk really isn't a musician I've ever cared for, but this is one of the FUNNIEST songs I've heard in a long time. At first, I didn't understand the song title, I just thought it was one of those failed "cool" attempts at distorting song names with purposely misspelled words (need I remind the world of Sk8er Boi?), but when I finally listened to the lyrics, I realized what she was singing about was a situation that all women are probably in once or twice in their life:

Girl goes to bar to unwind.
Frat-boy-date-rape-homophobe tries to get girl to sleep with him.
Girl just wants to be left alone.
Boy does not leave her alone.
Girl tells him to get the hell out (or in this case, go jerk himself off because there's no way she's going to do it).

So what if this song isn't a masterpiece? It's a great song for girls and P!nk just moved up a notch in my book. Great for a laugh...and for a workout mix!

Devendra Banhart – Insect Eyes Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm surprised this song doesn't have more comments...really, it is amazing. It's about obsession/love/lust. It's disturbing and wonderful.

Bob Dylan – It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about life. Plain and simple. I don't think any explanation beyond that is needed. Dylan is definitely a poet, and in being a poet he uses a good amount of metaphors in his songs, but a unique attribute of his is that he can still use metaphors while being perfectly obvious. I can see how it's easy to fall into that over-analyzation with this song, seeing as it's so packed with information, but really, if you want to know the meaning, just look at the last line of the song.

At any rate, the lyrics of this song are easily one of his best, and whenever I finish listening I'm left with a feeling of awestruck amazement. This is one of those perfect literary accomplishments. Like all Dylan songs, after I finish hearing this I don't have the heart to listen to anything else, because I know the next song I hear isn't going to be anywhere near as astonishing and fulfilling. This is perfect. One can only hope to be half as good a writer as Dylan is.
