| Bon Iver – Blindsided Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Personally I think this song is about depression... Most probably depression he is feeling over his relationship break up. "I'm crippled and slow" I think this line is about the lack of energy and motivation people can feel when they are depressed. "For the agony I'd rather know" And, I think this line is about how sometimes being depressed is easier than fighting depression. It's much more comfortable to stay stay depressed that to go out and make change (again, I refer you to the 'crippled and slow' quote). So he would rather know the agony than have to make an effort. "Cause blinded I am blindsided" to me this suggests again the fact that he is depressed, or 'blinded' from seeing the world in a 'healthy' or 'typical' way. The fact that he is 'blindsided', means that he is siding with his depression... again a reference to how he would prefer to 'side' with his depression, rather than fight it. I think the end of the song shows his readiness to accept and fight against his depression. The Line: "For the irony, i'd rather know" Suggests that while he said he would 'rather know the agony', he really would prefer not to experience it... The the change to the line "Cause blinded I WAS blindsided" shows that while he is still 'blinded', or depressed, he is not 'blindsided', or siding with his depression anymore. He is ready to fight it. Anyway, that's my personal interpretation. I hope you liked it :) |

| Bon Iver – Skinny Love Lyrics | 17 years ago |

First off, I would like to comment on how amazing it is that there are so many interpretations of the line: "Pour a little salt we were never here" It's interesting how so many of us have brought in our personal contexts here and shaped our own meaning. I interpreted this line somewhat differently. Is anyone else familiar with the fact that salt can actually be used to cover a scent. So, for example, many people sprinkle salt around their properties in order to stop dogs from sniffing around, and marking their territory. Because obviously, if they can't smell, they don't know where they need to mark their territory! Ok, I digress, the point is, that I believe the symbolism of salt indicates that they are trying to cover up what happened, so now one else becomes knowledgeable as to their 'skinny love'/broken relationship. This takes me to the line after the one I previously discussed: "Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer" While to others, this is a line that is symbolic, I find it to be more realistic. To me, I see this line as an incident of physical abuse. Then, the use of the salt, to cover it up from others who may discover it. This, then leads me to two different conclusions... The first, I don't particularly like, but it does seem feasible... Perhaps Bon Iver is actually abusive. Whilst this is an awful thought because his music is beautiful, I believe it to be possible. And personally, I think the chorus only serves to reinforce this interpretation: "I told you to be patient I told you to be fine I told you to be balanced I told you to be kind" Perhaps the chorus represents that idea of blame, that often abusive people use to justify their actions. I think it is important to remember though, that while this interpretation implies that the active voice is abusive, it does not necessarily confirm that the active voice in Bon Ivers'. It would certainly not be the first time a musician has written a song from another persons perspective. This, brings me to my other interpretation... That Bon Iver is actually writing from the perspective of a woman that is being abused by her partner. The lines, "I'll be holding all the tickets And you'll be owning all the fines" suggests that the active voice may actually be the person who is being abused. Because, obviously, you don't owe fines if you are abused, most often, you confront your partner, ask him to pay the fine, he apologises, you forgive... the cycle continues. Anyway, there is my two cents. Both interpretations, however, include the assumption that the relationship is abusive. But, it's not concrete to the interpretations, and they can be easily adapted. There are such thing as negative and harmful relationships that don't necessarily fit the abusive pigeon hole. I would just like to comment on the last line before I sign off... "Who will fall far behind" I think this is just him questioning who will come out on top in the end? Who will be hurt the most by the break up? Who will go on to a new and better and happier relationship in the future? Who will get all the future love interest when they do split? I think it just brings up all those common and paranoid thoughts that often we have when we face the possibility of a break up. That fear of being alone, that fear of falling, as you see your ex-partner flying high. So we stay there, unhappy, but too afraid to leave. Bon Iver is a clever man. His lyrics are really poetic and his music sings out the meaning beautifully in harmony with the words. I love skinny love... the song, that is ;) |

there's those thinking more or less less is more but if less is more how you're keeping score? Means for every point you make your level drops kinda like its starting from the top I think this quote is simply remarking upon the paradox of 'less being more' and equally, 'more being more'. I think what he is trying to say is that material possessions do not equal happiness. But, then again he is saying that you can't live by the philosophy that 'less is more' because by doing so, you make no progress. You are born with certain material possessions, then if you gradually let go of these material things, life becomes a harder to manage because you are used to the material. This affects your happiness, and thus, your level is constantly 'dropping'. I think the quote implies that we have to find the middle ground. That we have to find some balance between the material and the emotional. We mustn't let the material take over who we are, or let who we are defy the material, because, like in the movie, without material possessions, one cannot survive. I love this song =) |

i would just like to say...people can hav intermite relationships with people of the same sex without being gay. (internite as in meaningful that is). I think there is too much speculation on this whole issue its just about having your trust betrayed, and then having it betrayed again coz u trust 2 easily then wanting to be left with a 'scar' so as to remind u not to slip up again. oh and jsut to clear the air, missy didn't acctually write this song. xox |

| Missy Higgins – Blind Winter Lyrics | 18 years ago |

i have 2 say that to me this song is about a girl on drugs who spent her life living by the rules, conforming to society and carrying out moral values in society that are not nesicarily justified by anything: "where you think its written down, this way that we should go". I think the fact it is a "blind winter" refers to the surreal world she is in, created by the drugs. How she "stumbled on every step closer to the ground" is a applicable both in litteral and metaphorical sense. People are terrified of her as they see her lying on the street, on drugs (as she lay there the people starrid feeling terrified...) and to most people seeing a person like that is intimidating. No one would help. She gave up on life and was judged this made her angry and to rebel as represented by the repetition of the last chorus. I dont no...i have never really thought of it differently to this, but maybe thats just me! Take Care! xox |

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh i now understand. ok so, this song is about a person and their particular life events and how they come 2 realise that u have to face up to lifes challenges and then and only then will you work things out and be 'unbroken'. so the first paragraph is about wen this girl/boys parents divorced. she runs with her mum away from her dad and then they divorce. chorus.........implying things wont b the same again and u will view the world in a different way from now on. but later you will see the good it did you and find that u can only learn from this life event. second paragraph is i think quite literally about losing ur virginity......then falling pregnant. ur partner freaks out in a rage and then says sorry and it wont happen again. And here is another life changing event! chorus again implys that in time u will see the good and learn from this. the third paragraph is th realisation that life is full of bad moments, events and mistakes and there is no way in the world that u can avoid them!! so the answer is to face up to them, learn from them, grow from then and find urslef a little unbroken. Chorus now sums up what the person has come to realise and is in the end positive. missy seems to like the idea that u hav 2 learn and take the bad things life brings u and grow from them. So while her songs are dark they acctually imply and amazing sense of optomism! GO MISSY! |

i dont neccesarily dissagree it could be about a gay relationship but however i do think it a pretty ambiguous assumption. i think its just a bout a relationship that for some reason or other is not excepted....it could be 4 a range of reasons: religious belief, peer influence, family restraints, or homosexuality. i dont think its fair 2 name one of these and make it the meaning of the song. it will mean a different thing to each listener. i dont think there is a direct meaning for the listener to take even if there was a direct meaning for Missy. Happy listening =D |

hey guys i also agree this song is very much confusing in its meaning. however i think it is about taking everything given 2 u or shown to u in ur life regardless of whether its good or bad and making yourself grow as a person. "eat that soil"....i think would refer to her home life soil being ur 'roots' so take in ur bad home life and use it 2 grow. "drink the rain" so the rain obviously being the bad things that happen in ur life, it will alway rain both metaporically and literally but we have 2 u it to our advantage so again in this girls case, to grow as a person. "chase you if u play their little games"...i u let the cruel people in the world see how they have hurt you then they will continue as they have won their game....so therefore u must not play it, become detached, and show no fear. so she must use her facade to pretend then when she can, perhaps if being abused as a child wen she reaches adulthood run from her past. this leads to having a wall to hide herself...if u were putting on a facade pretending that the cruel people in the world, the people who hurt you, didn't in fact even effect you then having no place 2 hide and let u be u would be hard. so she cant cry because there is no where for her to hide.......she is stuck with her facade and the only way 2 escape the horrors she faces is to take them as her own as the food for personal growth. so to summerise its about using even the bad things as building blocks and becoming stronger, wiser and fuller as a person even when you can only be yourself around yourself. hmmm confusion lol " |
