Bob Dylan – Isis Lyrics 15 years ago
long post warning *

this is my attempt to break the song down

the first verse is pretty straightforward. He marries his love but then leaves him for been reckless and inattentive. When she leaves he does as well and starts his journey.

2nd and 3rd verse- I actually believe these to be the most significant verses in the whole song but i will explain why at the end. for now he arrives at a town and meets a shady character who asks if bob wants to go on an adventure, he accepts and they set off.

4th verse - sign that maybe bob and his isis arranged to meet after year apart - "we'd be back by the fourth" that's the best news that ive ever heard". Maybe means that they get back on the 4th of may a year after bob and isis were married.

5th - sign of why isis might of left him "i was thinking about isis how she thought i was so reckless". he is greedy and his mind is corrupt by thoughts of riches

6th - isis promises to meet bob once he changes. bob realises how self involved he was and cant remember the best of her anymore, he will settle for less as long as she sticks around.

7th - he realises his partner isnt a treasure hunter but a grave robber and only wanted his help to break into the tomb and not share the riches

8th - they trek for days through the freezing weather and eventually he dies in the cold. it is now that he realises all that his partner wanted was company and a friend. Everything is now put into perspective for him and he appreciates that their are more important things in life then gold and riches. been loving and loved is much more important.

"I broke into the tomb but the casket was empty
There was no jewels no nothing I felt I'd been had
When I saw that my partner was just being friendly
When I took up his offer I must-a been mad."

it is brilliantly contrasted in the emptiness of the casket, where the casket represents bob. When the casket was unopened he was driven by treasure and money, the empty casket shows that he is just trying to fill a void the money cannot bring. It hits home how selfish he was, and how stupid he was to believe that there actually was treasure when all the guy wanted was a friend and to not die alone.

9th - this is his transformation. Him burying the man in the casket i believe is him accepting the fact that his life cannot be filled by gold and money but by his isis. he says goodbye to his friend and buries his partner and says a prayer so he doesnt leave this world alone, but with a friend.

10 and 11 - his return to his isis, all pretty self explanatory. he has obviously changed and isis notices, she is willing to take him back.

12 - "what drives me to you is what drive me insane" - i believe this means that he has found his insanity in isis. where as before his old normal self could not appreciate what he had, his new self is drawn towards isis and it drives him mad. Seeing her again brings back all his best memories of her.

i believe this song is about self growth represented by the journey he took. his original search for the treasure represented his self involved, reckless side. the discovering of the tomb, the part of him that loves isis.

the 2nd and 3rd verse i believe represent this the best. the town he visits is divided right down the middle. one side dark, the other side light. he hitches his pony on the right, so he chooses the light side. The light side represents what he is and the dark side of town represents what he has to become.

When he meets this stranger It represents his character - what he originally thought to be his true self or his light self is shown when he believes he is meeting a treasure hunter and believes there is treasure. But the dark side of town still remains unknown and a mystery to him, just as the treasure hunter is just someone who he hasnt bothered to understand. What he doesnt realise is that the dark side of town and the dark shady character that is the treasure hunter (who is just someone who is lonely and in need of a friend) is actually the person he has to become to be with isis. This only becomes apparent to him when he open up the casket and realizes there is no treasure. At least that is my take on it

That may have all been an incomprehensible mess, but it made sense in my head :)

The Dandy Warhols – (You Come In) Burned Lyrics 15 years ago
this song is ridiculously good.

I think its about how someone gets into a relationship and always walks away from it even if its not necessarily what he/she wants. Let someone in but the other person will always get burned. That is my interpretation at least.

This really is an amazing song, Nick Talbot is criminally underrated.

As for its meaning, well I think it is a pretty straightforward imo. He falls in love with a girl who leaves him even though he was sure he would be the one she would stick with. He then realises after she left him that she has done exactly the same thing to another guy before.

Oasis – Lord Don't Slow Me Down Lyrics 17 years ago
A few months on from this songs release as a single and I still reckon this song is absolutely rocking.

This song has sort of had a reverse effect on me because its one of those ones which i have learned to love and appreciate more over time rather than getting tired of listening to it.

A lot of people were questioning why liam didnt sing this song (including myself). But after Liam version was leaked I think its fair to say that this is noels song.

Brilliant tune

Elliott Smith – Condor Ave. Lyrics 17 years ago
Ill throw in my two cents worth for this song

She took the Oldsmobile out past Condor Ave.
And she locked the car and slipped past
Into rythmic quietude
Lights burning
Voice dry and hoarse

*The whole first verse is all very descriptive and clear. This first part explains how a women runs to the quite and solitude of her car after a fight with her boyfriend. Her voice still aches after all the shouting in the fight

I threw the screen door like a bastard back and forth
The chimes fell over each other
I fell onto my knees
The sound of the car driving off made me feel diseased

*Slamming the screen door back and forth in frustration and makes the chimes that you have outside your front door fall over. Sinks onto his knees and he hears the car driving off which makes him realise that she is not coming back.

Sick shouting like you hear at the fairground
Now I'm picking up to put away
Anything of yours that's still around
I don't know what to do with your clothes or your letters
It'll make a whisper out of you

*He heres the screams in the background that are obviously coming from people who have witnessed or seen something horrible (the car crash). He ignores these and goes back insode and starts collecting stuff that she left at his not knowing how to let go of her not knowing whether to throw them away or keep them just in case she comes back.

She took the Oldsmobile out past Condor Ave.
The fairground's lit
A drunk man sits by the gate she's driving through
Got his hat tipped, bottle back in between his teeth

*Whereas the first verse was described from the mans point of view this is more described from an objective point of view. Describing a typical drunk who cannot stop drinking his beer with his hat slipping of his head. He is sitting by a gate as a car is approaching it.

Looks like he's buried in the sand at the beach
I can't think about you driving off to leave, barely awake
To take a little nap while the road is straight

*If you think about a man half buried at the beach it describes how this drunk is wedged under the wheel of a car (not pretty i know) and you can only see the top half of his body. Goes on to describe how the women fell asleep at the wheel she veers of a perfectly straight road to crash and running over this drunk in the process.

I wish that car had never been discovered
They took away the bottle and the hat he was under
That's the one thing that he could never do
And it'll make a whisper out of you

*He describes how the drunk was deiscovered with the bottle of beer still between histeeth and his hat still on his head. The people who discover him take the bottle of beer out of his mouth which is a thing he could never do and now he can rest in peace.

She took the Oldsmobile out past Condor Ave.
Cops were running around the scene
Looking for some kind of clue
They never get uptight when a moth gets crushed
Unless a light bulb really loved him very much

* I think its also important note that I think the women who was driving the car died in the accident aswell. First line is pretty self explanitory, describing how the cops are looking for a clue as to how the accident happened. They disregard the drunk who got crushed because he is just an insect who doesnt really matter to them. Moths are attracted to light so the next line shows how unless he had something to live for (like how moths are attracted to light) the police wont bother to concern themselves with him.

Blowing smoke from my cigarette
Little whisper smoke signs you'll never get
You're in your Oldsmobile driving past the moon
Headlights burning bright ahead of you
And someone's burning out on Condor Ave.

*Back to the man at home who broke up with his girlfriend shows how he is just sitting at home smoking a ciggarette little knowing that his ex girlifriend just got in a car crash on condor avenue.

What a shitty thing to say
Did you really mean it?
You never said a word to me about what passed between us
So now I'm leaving you alone
You can do whatever the hell you want to

*The man sitting at home thinking about the argument he just had with his girlfrined and all the horrible things she said and whether she really meant them. He is never gonna call her or bother her again and assume that their lives will take separate paths not knowing that she died that night.

-'Itll make a whisper out of you' - just means how it will leave you speechless or leave you felling small and insignificant.

Oasis – Fade In-Out Lyrics 17 years ago
this song had so much potential but they just stuffed around with the recording. If they had taken the definitely maybe way with this song and just gone for simple guitar tracks then we could be looking at one of their greatest ever songs. Having said that noel does a brilliant live version of this as a combination with setting sun. The lyrics for this song are awesome. Sounds like its about how people are constantly coming and going in and out of our lives.

Elliott Smith – Fear City Lyrics 17 years ago
this song is really underated only 2 comments!

I think its about the fear and paranoia and isolation that comes with living in the city nowadays and how everyones really on their own when they are confonting the city hence -"But they can't put the paper in your face, You're just trying to walk by, So now I got a new game, baby, No one's going to recognize it". Also this line - "I can do everything that your man does except for better" shows how everyone is competing against each other in the city to keep their head above the surface.

Blur – Miss America Lyrics 18 years ago
I have aboslutely no idea of the actual meaning of this song although I suspect it somehow might be anti-american, but that is mainly due to the trend of the rest of MLIR (I think they were gonna call it Blur vs America of something)
