Muse – Shrinking Universe Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm thinking along the lines of valnn a few posts up... but with some key differences. Basically, I think Matt is talking about the death of religion. That religion/god is now obsolete and time to go (the suicide). The shrinking universe is relative... the ancient view of the universe (about 6000 miles wide and 6000 years old) continued to shrink as science has moved forward to discover its true age and size. Also the biblical morality (used at one time to justify slavery and women as second class humans, and still used to demonize gays today, prevent birth control, etc.) doesn't keep up with advancing and expanding ideas of equality and morality as time moves on.

In the begining section... Matt tells god (tongue-in-cheek) that if he looks too closely at man... that god will see reflected his own imperfections (i.e., since man created god in man's image). All in all, I think Matt (who's an atheist) is saying that traditional religion should just decide to call it quits.

Responding to some earlier posts... because of the huge population explosion over the past 100 years, there are many more Christians (in numbers) alive today than ever before in history. Just because atheism is more visable doesn't mean there are fewer numbers of religious. Its just a percentage thing.

Rufus Wainwright – I'm-a-Runnin' Lyrics 18 years ago
OMG! After seeing octo's post above... and realizing he would have been 14 or so when the movie was shot... that means this song could have been written after his horrible experience when he was raped in London's Hyde Park at age 14. If that is the case, then these lyrics are just so poignant, and so like Rufus to use emotional events in his life when writing a song.

Rufus Wainwright – I'm-a-Runnin' Lyrics 18 years ago
Oh wow. I just ran across a YouTube clip of Rufus singing this in that Tommy Tricker movie from 1988. I read where he wrote the lyrics and composed the song! So many of this facial expressions and singing style are exactly the same he has today. Plus you can hear a hint of the intriquing chord progressions he's known for today. He truely was an incredible child prodigy!

Rufus Wainwright – Rules and Regulations Lyrics 18 years ago
While the gay issue making it more difficult to break into the mainstream is a likely theme here... there may be an added more personal dimension to that. I've had a feeling that the "you" this song is sung to... "the innocent culprit" he looked back on.. could be his father. If you check out YouTube clips of Loudon Wainwright III from the 70's and 80's, he looks so much like Rufus, only cuter, with a more mainstream voice, and wrote songs with more widespread appeal. He even was on episodes of MASH as the folksinging soldier.
