of Montreal – October Is Eternal Lyrics 16 years ago
I fucking love this song. The way it is foreshadowed with little breaks into the moaning deep voices in previous songs. The way it starts out as just another of Montreal avant-pop piece, almost a lower key neutral of what Repudiated Immortals achieves- but takes a left turn suddenly dropping the listener into hell. The deep, moaning voices murmuring on for just long enough to make you get an impression of eternity, rather than a brief diversion in a pop song. It almost reminds me of a Hellraiser kind of thing.

I can't believe no one commented on this yet, such an original song.

of Montreal – Rapture Rapes the Muses Lyrics 16 years ago
1q2w3e4r, when I hear this song I don't think of romance. I think of the day when I saw both the bands The Rapture and Muse, and how much fucking better The Rapture was. Man, that day Rapture truly did rape the Muses.

The Dresden Dolls – Half Jack Lyrics 16 years ago
okay, i'm not bothering to read the whole thing. It never really occurred to me that this could be about her father.

I always assumed that it was about a person who was unsure if they were in need of a sex change (an issue that obviously comes up again in 'sex changes'). They feel that they are not more man than woman, but exactly half of each, so should she get a sex change? there is a solution for people with bigger problems than hers, but she's stuck.

The Flaming Lips – The Gash Lyrics 16 years ago
zacfoo, i'm pretty sure the flaming lips are at least agnostic. the concert i went to wayne stopped between songs to denounce organized religion.

great anthemic song with usual great lyrics, though.

The Flaming Lips – Mr. Ambulance Driver Lyrics 16 years ago
Totally agree with spinning sun, but have to disagree with Annie Rose. The lips admit to experimenting with all kinds of drugs in their earlier days and Steve Drozd (former drummer, current guitar player) was addicted to heroin.

One of the deepest things about this song for me is one of the same things i think was heavily prevalent on The Soft Bulletin, which is that the flaming lips seem to have an inability to believe in god, but love to write about the situations where people want a god the most, such as when a loved one dies. In this song, like on 'Waiting for a Superman' wayne uses a figure of authority who is unable to take the responsibility of being a god as his surrogate god for this situation.

The narrator of the song is with the girl that he loves hurt and dying in his arms, he's not even close to accepting it, but rather bargaining. Hes not praying, but wishing that he could switch places with her, willing to give his life to save hers, but realizes he must face the reality that he can do nothing. In his grief, he begins praying to the ambulance driver, who now has control over something he values more than his life. At first he's not so much asking for anything from the ambulance driver, other than the implied "please get here soon". He's just admitting things "i'm not a real survivor, because i'm wishing that i was the one that wasn't gonna be here anymore". But he crosses the line into asking more than just the human kind ear and speedy arrival when he asks the ambulance driver to "Tell me for everyone that dies
Someone new is born". he couldn't possibly know that, and the narrator is facing conflict in his spirituality that is dealt with more thoroughly (and discarded) in other Lips songs, such as "Vein of Stars".
Great song.

The Flaming Lips – Love Yer Brain Lyrics 16 years ago
This one of my favorite flaming lips songs, which makes it one of my favorite songs overall.

The first line is delivered with such heartbreaking fragility, and really makes me think about another one of my favorite opening lyrics from the velvet underground's 'heroin': "I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can
'Cause it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
And I'll tell ya, things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
And I guess that I just don't know"
These both make me feel about being at the brink of adulthood, there are so many possibilities of what to do with your life that it makes you freeze up. You don't know what path to take. Not surprisingly, both these are off of the first albums from these bands, when both wayne coyne and lou reed were at that very age. And both songs seem to suggest drugs as a way to deal with this terrifying indecision. "man, i'm not no drug addict, but a person's gotta have something to keep him from going insane."

"love yer brain" seems to be more philosophical, dealing with an inability to make sense of the world. Wayne talks about violent images of the street on fire and alienation, not knowing who to turn to in order to recieve direction at this juncture. "when you really need someone to talk to you, it doesn't always work like it's supposed to" saying that maybe the system is breaking down, maybe he's not meant to be a college boy and take the path through the system that most people choose. he's still philosophically undecided, unable to reconcile the notions of good and evil that have been taught to him with what he sees going on in the world, which is what i think he's saying in the line "Well, this man kills this other man, Who's killed this other man, so it's okay."

In the end, he decides that the world is a crazy place and it's going to drive him crazy as well, so he may as well come to terms with it. "so i guess i was right all along reading Mad magazine" Kickass song, love yer brain.

The Flaming Lips – Evil Will Prevail Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah, this is one of my favorite flips songs, probably #2 or #3. I pretty much agree with person10101, however I think that the song is too sad to say that the good people have much chance of winning the war.

It makes me think of pacifism, like all the good people realize that it is evil to hurt anyone - even the evil people, because there is no real good and no real evil, only people who are misguided and bad situations (like natural disasters and disease) - and so all the good people can do is try to band together and convince the bad people in the world to see reason, and to try and conquer the bad situations. But that's the thing about pacifism, it rarely works as the only way of going about things because the misguided people number in the millions, they won't see reason, will kill the good people, and prevent them from conquering the bad situations.

So the good people are sad because they know they will be overcome by the evils of the world, and the only comfort they have is in knowing they did their best and that there is a little good in this world, because they are it. This allows them to have smiles stretched so wide they can't even take a breath, they are the only ones who know true happiness because they are the only ones who understand true sadness.

The Flaming Lips – A Change at Christmas (Say It Isn't So) Lyrics 16 years ago
This is my favorite song. Period. No one I know (even those that love the flaming lips) even like it a little.

Wayne Coyne has the unique ability to say whatever he feels at anytime he wants and it serves to be absolutely endearing and genuine. If he didn't, this song would end up sounding like something crooned by a hack in a starbucks.

What's great about this song is that it reflects what it's like to be someone as optimistic as Coyne, it strikes this perfect balance between extreme happiness at knowing what goodness there is in the world and indescribable sadness at knowing how much we're failing to live up to our potential as human beings to create a world that is as beautiful as possible.

It's strange that this song is about the holiday season, because one of the things I've always liked about the Lips is that they seem pretty atheistic. But this 'A Change at Christmas' isn't religious, it's about the secular aspects of the holiday season. The time of year when the world is at its coldest and bleakest, we decorate things and celebrate humanity with those closest to us. Everyone is nicer to each other around Christmas time, it's the "holiday spirit". We give to charities and have parties and show everyone how much we love them. Wayne is saying that this is "mankind's truest potential", imploring us to think about how much better the world would be if we could just stop time there, maintain that kind of spirit our whole lives. Every year he thinks that the change is a real, permanent one, and every year he is let down and emotionally crushed that it only lasts for one shining moment, and we just go back to the way we were.

The last verse is the most angry, as Wayne speaks with a cynical friend of his. He has a dire view of humanity and says that evil is human nature and there's nothing we can do about it, that's just the way we are. And that genuine voice says in the saddest tone it can muster, "say it isn't so."

I know that I just spent a couple of paragraphs "explaining" a very obvious song, but it means a lot to me. I don't usually respond to sappy songs, they seem unnatural. I usually prefer songs that are kind of cynical or satirical towards gooey "let's all love one another" sentiments, but this song is truly heartbreaking and has made me cry like only the Flips can.

The Flaming Lips – Vein of Stars Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with billyvmc2000, and actually heard this song right at the point that I got a lot of comfort out of it.

While the heaven/hell comments clearly cover organized religion, I think that with a title like "At War with the Mystics" the idea of the "vein of stars" is more directed at the people who have an unspecified belief. The repeated "calling out my name" part I think is really comforting and is meant to say that it isn't really so bad living without that belief. Definitely my personal favorite song on this album.
