I don't think he says "I will hold on." Rather, he says "I'm a whore." But I can see how it's hard to tell, the way he stretches the syllables. Also, Ed, the singer and writer of this song, is gay. So it's probably about a dude. And about being hooked on some good lovin'. But of course the great thing about songs is that the most important interpretation is (usually) that of the listener. So you can pretend it's about a girl if you like. |

| I've always heard it as "thin". Which rhymes with "begin" in the following line. This girl is thin and vapid. It's always bothered me a little that he's attacking someone's physical appearance, but this song is "fucking perfect", as noted above, so Wire get a pass. I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH. The "woo-oo-ooo"s really push it over the top into pure bliss. | |

I think it's about meeting one's fate. "a thousand miles above our heads they are bleeding mighty currents uopn the day" Seems to be about the stars. Like astrology. And the comment about the medium would seem to be in line with this. But of course one's own interpretation is most important. |

Remember this song was written while the Cold War was still very a real thing, but it addresses the need for peace, which is still an important message today. There's a pretty clear and upsetting description of a fallout shelter: ("There's a room where the light won't find you / Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down"). This describes the danger that we face, and that ultimately all we have is each other. It's also about everyone's struggle to make their life worthwhile with an uncertain future in front of them ("Help me make the most / Of freedom and of pleasure / Nothing ever lasts forever"). Odd that so few seem to have hit on this, but it's pretty heavy lyrical content for a song that is just an 80s hit to some people. I really want to sing this song at karaoke this week. I was afraid it would bum everyone out, but if this message board is any indication, the apocalyptic lyrics will probably sail right over most of their heads. |
