It reminds me of just being in a bad mood, but usually its just silly mellodrama.
And I can just picture a boyfriend being like fuck that shit, i am not falling for it, you just want me to feel bad for you and buy you a coke or a snickers bar. |

yeah, fantastic song. definately could be about Edie Sedgwick. But could very well be applied to any rich person, thinking they are far better than others, only to have everything they held in such high regard, lost. |

noballs, i am not here to piss you off, just to discuss a song. so if you have something to interpret about the song, rather than me, great. but i think its pretty rediculous to just shoot me down rather than discuss your views on the lyrics and their meaning. thats the point of the website. "songmeanings", not "lets shit on other posters forum". i am sure there are great discussion boards for that though.
i heard this song and was suprised by all of the penis references. so i wanted to see what other people thought.
i explained what i thought it could mean. do you know jones isnt homophobic? that he couldnt be in the closet and in turmoil over not dealing with his sexuality? that is something that really does go on in life. mr. jones could be going through that, and it could be very hard to deal with if someone tried to tell him that, in fact it could really be the worst thing for him, especially if he were married, had kids, etc.
i am just saying, there are a lot of penis references in the song, and this could be one possible explaination for what this song could be about. but i didnt write the song, so i dont know. thats why i am at this forum, to see if anyone actually knows for sure what it means.
good day to you. (and i am not being a sarcastic or hateful) |

why is it so hard for some people to believe this song references homosexuality, even if he is speaking of mr. jones? as though calling people gay is not an offensive thing to say to someone who is quite likey homophobic or a closet gay. and no, dylan doesnt only write politically fused songs, sorry. i suppose it is a coincidence that every line refers ro something long, thin and hard (thank you bob dylan fan for specifics). seriously, why is it so hard to believe dylan is referencing homosexual inuendos? it especially makes sence that its about someone he is not fond of. yes, i did watch i'm not there and the song still makes sence in context to the movie. sorry homosexuality is just soooo taboo. (no, i am not gay, but who the fuck cares if dylan references homosexuality in a song!!!) |

so i heard this song for the first time a couple of days ago, and was like holy crap! is dylan singing about a gay man who is dealing with sexual identity!? each lyric is an obvious reference to the penis, ie. pencil in hand, wood, one eyed midget, sward swallower, lumber jack (wood ), handed a bone...etc. so i searched to see what the consensus was here, and i feel validated in what symbolism i heard. cool song, wild lyrics, wow! |
