Dispatch – Mayday Lyrics 18 years ago
I like DownIsthenewup's idea about this song the best...my initial interpretation was very similar

Dispatch – Elias Lyrics 18 years ago
I love how genuine this song is...kind of simple instrumentation...a couple acoustic guitars, a djembe and maybe bongos, and harmonic singing...does a good job of reflecting the subject matter

Jack Johnson – Never Know Lyrics 18 years ago
I think simply, the message is that we're not as big a deal as we think we are. we don't know anything, we're just delusional. we think we know answers? yeah right, all we have is experiences, memories of these experiences, and egos. I LOVE this song!!

Jack Johnson – Imagine Lyrics 18 years ago
why does nobody comment on this song?

This is quite possibly the best cover of any song i've ever heard...come on jack's chill but still passionate style mixed with lennon's genius lyrics? This was my favorite song the first week after I heard it...

I believe in every single word of this song...and no, i'm not a communist...its too bad human nature (greed, lust for money, material culture) prevents some of these ideals from ever being reached. I love this song, partially because when I first heard it (lennon's version, years ago) I already agreed with every word.

first stanza: Lennon sees through religion. I have no problem with religion, though I myself am not religious. What I believe this verse means is that there are so many people out there who live and follow certain morals for the sole reason of getting the afterlife they want...thats ok...but isn't it better to live well, give the world the best you have, from the bottom of your heart, not because you want to go to heaven, but because you really mean it? because you really want to help? at least that's how I feel. John says, don't live for hope of life after death, live for the sake of being alive.

second verse: I also believe in this. really, if you think about it, countries are way too fucking big, strict, etc. to really promote the interests of the people they represent. for example: consistently, half our country (or 75%, under bush) is not satisfied with the leadership. Now, I'm not saying that abolishing countries is possible, or even a good Idea, considering human nature again. but it's just nice to imagine a smoother system, where people are nice to each other (if that's possible, given how ethnocentric everyone is). however, it is true that every single war in modern history is due to religion, or more recently, the US leaders being dumbasses (country, greed, etc). this is a cry for people to see the world with an open mind, to imagine the possibility of peace. and to do this, john attacked the biggest delusion of humankind (religion).

the last verse is very reminiscent of communism, or at least the communist manifesto from marx. don't get me wrong, if we were to try to implement communism into the US today, it would fail. miserably. why? because people don't believe in it, and because it doesnt work in groups of more than a few people, cuz there's always some jerk who thinks he's gonna be happier if he rules everything. still nice to think about people sharing all the world though.

so why do I like this song so much? the chorus ties it all together. EVERYBODY has to imagine a life like this, a life where people don't hate each other due to differences. where countries, religion, money, and posessions don't lead to such strong greed and envy. It's like a good dream...if everybody just thought about what life was really worth, John says, we could accomplish this

I hope someday, you'll join us,
and the world will live as one

Jack Johnson – Plastic Jesus/Fall Line/Spring Wind Lyrics 18 years ago
I heard this song on the Greek theatre DVD (and live at the concert, too!) and the spring wind portion of this medley immediately caught my ear.

Oh, the wine bottle's half empty
the money's all been spent
we're a cross between our parents
and hippies in a tent

this song (spring wind, by greg brown), especially the part jack sings, just resonates with me. this song is lyrically brilliant, so simple, yet it describes human emotions and behavior so well from a first person perspective. And I love the feeling of the unconquerable spirit of love

love called just like the wild bird
its just another day
the spring wind blew my list of
things to do...

Jack Johnson – No Other Way Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, the real focus of this song isn't on the person he is talking to; rather, its the message he's getting across. In a nutshell, I think he's relating that people think themselves silly struggling to find and/or apply meaning and reason to everything, and he's using the situation described in the song to get this across. Sometimes, we just don't need to think so much (go to sleep), and instead maybe relax a little and enjoy life because we never really know anything for sure.

Jack Johnson – Badfish/Boss D.J. Lyrics 18 years ago
lyrics are a little off I think...isn't it "but I won't walk up upon the sea like it was dry land"?

I'm not sure if this is better than sublime's version...both are great. but I do like the Boss DJ part better than sublime's boss dj

Israel Kamakawiwo’ole – Hawaii '78 Lyrics 18 years ago
there is so much passion in both the lyrics and music of this song...I've never been to hawaii, and I don't believe in the religious stuff, but I do share the same worry for what humans are doing to the great earth we have

HAHAHA It's great how the person who submitted these lyrics actually typed the right amount of ooo's. hahaha...even if you forgot "K, this one's for Gabby"

this song is absolutely beautiful. I love the simple sound of the ukulele with IZ's voice. Good lyrics too, even though kamakawiwo'ole didnt write them. I have never met a person who does not love or at least appreciate this song...

Even though I think the lyrics may be about hope for a good afterlife or something spiritual like that, I like to think of of it like some things here on earth in this life may be tough, but when the good times do come, they will seem so much sweeter. The author is saying that this is the life we have, positive and negative, I love it for what it's worth

This song is absolutely beautiful. I think I like it as much or more than IZ's version of somewhere over the rainbow/wonderful world. It's hard to write a relaxing and positive song like this without getting corny, but IZ does a real nice job. much love, you are missed!

Iron & Wine – Boy with a Coin Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one of my all time favorite songs. great melody (like all of sam's songs), love the clapping patterns, and unbelievably strong and moving lyrics. Iron and Wine at it's best. I think to get a good idea of Sam's intentions of the meaning of this song, it's good to remember that Sam claims he's not a religious person. I'm much the same way, I am not religious yet I also find the effect of religion on humans to be very interesting...i think sam puts into words and music a lot of the philosophies I also have.

Dispatch – The General Lyrics 18 years ago
I just saw in 2002 that somebody thought this song had a hidden meaning about jesus? what? you dont have to be viewed as a diety to forgive somebody. sure the general was a hero figure and jesus probably was too (i wasn't alive when the dude lived), but I'm pretty sure this song was written by Chad, so i'm going to have to say that this song is just straight up anti-war, and I couldn't agree more with the message. maybe if braddigan wrote it it would be about jesus

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – The Star Spangled Banner Lyrics 18 years ago
I wrote a full essay on this song in one of my college coarses. This song was played at woodstock, but apparently Hendrix wasn't vehemently anti-war. When I interpret it, I like to think of it as a reality check to really get across the horrors of war to a good sized audience. He isn't saying "fuck war" necessarily, he's just showing us that war isn't about heroes being patriotic and all that delusional bullshit, it's about tons of innocent people being killed alongside a few rebels, by large amounts of bullets, chemicals and explosives, being dropped by a big country (the US, hence the star spangled banner) on a major power trip. This song can be very easily interpreted as anti-war, I see it this way myself, but it's up to the audience to interpret it. This is also why when hendrix was asked on a TV show interview to comment on this song, he didn't say what it was about, he just said "I thought it was beautiful", and he recieved a standing ovation from the audience at the show.

Bush – Glycerine Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with the idea that this song is about being in love with someone after the relationship doesnt work out. That much I think is pretty straightforeward, doesnt take much analysis. apart from that, the beauty of music and art is that people apply it to their own lives, otherwise it wouldn't be art, just a fact.

to share a little insight into this song's inspiration, my friend told me that he either saw or read (I forgot) something about the background story. Apparently the singer was in a long relationship with his girlfriend, was going to propose, and waited too long until it eventually fell apart. the resulting emotions turned into this song...I have no idea if this is true or not, just thought I'd share
