| Being that Dustin usually makes lyrics that can be interpreted in different ways. | |

I believe banner9588 has got it. This song screams Christianity. I believe it isn't just about doing more good and generous things-- though I can understand that interpretation from a secular perspective. But IMO Its about an individual that not only has lived for himself, but he has denied God for his selfish pride and the temporal. He has no fear of God because he's lived his life comparing himself to others in this world. But what I think Dustin is trying to portray is that good works isn't the issue, because we all fall short of the biblical model. We can't earn our salvation, and compare ourselves to others, we need to deny ourselves and realize that Christ has payed the penalty for our sins on the cross. In fact, the bible regards our best work as "filthy rags" before God. I believe Dustin is trying to say WHAT IF the biblical model is correct? Then anyone who thinks that good works or "all I've done" can earn them salvation is sadly mistaken when we meet our maker. Of course, being as though it is Dustin, it can, and may, simply be about denying personal hedonism and living more for others over self. |

"...don't force anymore Christian meaning" Are you kidding me? Dustin writes songs to have multiple meanings to open up thinking and personal interpretation. Just like on the song "music box". I think T-H Rice's interpretation is spot on from a Christian perspective. He has his, and you have yours. Now go back reading your Sam Harris. |

| Good point jmquindon. At first Dustin is looking at this from the perspective of daedalus, but at the end he is getting emotionally wrapped in, and is personalizing this story from how he would react under similar circumstances as a father within his own life--hence, the change from Oh Gods to "Oh GOD" at the end of the song. | |

No ndude, no one agrees with. What is "the golden compass" anyway? Isn't that the big atheist book that recently flopped in theaters? Now kindly go back to your cave reading your Pullman, Harris, Hitchens, and Dawkins. |

Congrats to allen ajones for his weak, convoluted strawman. Most non-liberal bible translations (like the King James version) are very accurate translations that were meticulously translated from Hebrew/greek by experts. In reality, there are very few words in the bible that are in question, and which don't translate over well-- they certainly don't affect the accuracy and veracity of the biblical itself. Reject the bible if you will on personal preference or scientific dogma, but your previous statements don't hold any water-- even in the eyes of the self-professed higher critics of the bible, many of whom are Atheists. BTW, previous posters are dead on as far as the link between this song and Isaiah chapter 6. |

I absolutely love this song. Reclusion is arguably Anberlin's best work. I believe there are layers of depth to this song, so here's a crack: I believe the song is taking a first person perspective from the mind of a perpetual sinner. Murder is used as hyperbole for sin. Each corresponding verse carries increased weight and this song emphasizes manifested decay as sin's burden increases. The first verse represents the evil and prideful intentions of a sinful individual "there's something inside me that softly kills everyone around, they don't know their dead to me cause, intent never makes a sound." In the second, the individual is realizing that his sin is starting to have control over him, and he isn;t so sure he can control it anymore "If a stranger turns up missing, this song is my confession...losing self, in myself, inner demons make demands." Finally, in the last verse he admits his sins has knowlingly weighed him down, but he's addicted, and he can't stop its power over him "your suffocating me so very hard to breathe, my mask is growing heavy, but i've forgotten who's beneath." The chorus throughout the song is metaphoric of how this person's sickness has engulfed him. Skeletons are a big deal. Hiding them is tough buisness because people will always be on the look-out, and you'll always be wondering if the secret is safe or will it leak out? "Sins like skeletons are so very hard to find." |
