they used to play this when i worked in a clothing store. for the longest time i thought it was "tonight i can't believe it," and that still fits perfectly in my mind as well as the actual lyric. especially when taking this song as some ex trying to play it cool and get back on your good side - well, i'm not believing that. and i'm sure as hell not sticking around for that. love it to the max. |

i wasn't aware of the whole meth aspect of this album the first time i listened to it. then i was at the height of my eating disorder, and everything about food struck a chord with me. when i ate, i binged on ridiculous food, and i always had something with me i could use to start off a binge. i took the line about showing up for dinner when they tell you to as people forcing you to eat, and then to appease them eating as much as possible and in the end purging and feeling like you won. just a little personal insight for this. |

listening to this made me think of the John Cheever story "The Swimmer," and on further listening i feel like steven wilson has to have read this and drawn off of it for the lyrics to this song. |

i just started listening to this song a lot and i can feel that there's some ridiculous story being told, but here's my take:
the relationship is essentially dead, but why give up a constant like that. or, more simply, why give up an easy lay like that. so he's kinda feasting on the rotting emotion that he's too pushy to give up on. he's staying around her until he feels sick or full or potentially contented. either way, he regards the relationship as dead/carrion. |

i've always thought of this song as directly related to the movie "Laugh, Clown, Laugh." it's only really the opening that reminds me of it...it's a silent movie starring lon chaney, and he and another man fight for the affections of a girl. lon chaney is the clown, who ends up dying. |

geez, i feel so stupid for never seeing what you all obviously did, but since i've loved this song and heard it a million times since the first time i played it..i just can't force that image into the song.
the whole fight aspect of the song is very clear, and i took it all to be about a fight where she just never came back. i figured she left and just drove around town, and sees a carnival as maybe some place to cool off and try to get her head straight. she realizes that she's totally numb to this and can't be around anymore, and she hops onto the highway and is exhausted from their full-blown argument and falls asleep for a couple seconds when the road's straight. it's late enough (moon) that there aren't many cars and doesn't have to worry too much about hitting any other cars, and just disappears as she drives off.
for me, everything else just supported how heartbroken he is over it. she takes off and he realizes how stupid it was and that their relationship isn't going to recover and she might be gone forever. he probably picks everything up and then collapses and blows those smoke signals, thinking about her driving forever and never coming back.
i'm realizing that this doesn't fit entirely with the song because it's not the story intended; the tale here is a lot deeper than i ever figured. but like i said...i've come to love that story and it's hard to change. |
