okaaaaay, well, this is one of my favorite songs by meg & dia, especially the demo version. i have a theory about what this is about, and i just realized it now! okay, so did anyone ever read The Glass Menagerie? Because this song is very similar to the storyline. Let's analyze this! I'm setting up Sundays Watching the winter grow So oh... no Oh we're making excuses For human frailties It's not about me Oh it's never about me *The play is about a mother, Amanda, who is always all up in her kids (Laura & Tom) business. But not in a bad way. She wants the best for them, but she's a little controlling. The lines repeated in the song "it's not about me, it's never about me" are very similar to what Amanda says throughout the book. She constantly says that all she does she does for them. The "making excuses for human frailties" part seems to talk about Laura's "disability." I can't remember the how or why, but Laura had one leg shorter than the other and she was always upset about it. However, Amanda wouldn't let her make excuses for why she was so shy. She would not tolerate Laura's excuses. Setting up Sunday, I think, refers to the main part of the play, where Amanda and Tom set up a dinner for Laura and a "gentleman caller" whose name was Jim. Now home is gone And I'm lost and alone Now my lover's gone And I'm lost and alone *Amanda's husband was a travelling salesman who ran away from his family and was never heard from again. Hence, "my lover's gone." Kid I'm right here And I'm not leaving And there's no way to make you stay But I'm saving all my worries for the day you don't need me *Tom, who gave some sort of stablility to the family, threatened to leave his sister and mother several times because Amanda was so overbearing. I think she also thought that withought her, she would not know how Tom could go on with life, because he had somewhat of a dead-end job. Oh we're selling out Mondays Watching those children grow So cold.. no Oh we're weighing our hands down Our insecurities It's not about me Oh it's never about me *Laura was insecure talking to other people and spent most of her time with her glass animals. She weighed herself down with her shyness. Setting up Sundays Setting up Sunday Watching their hearts in soil It's not about me Oh oh it's never about me Making excuses For human frailties It's not about me It's not about me It's never about me Hey it's always about me *Amanda told Laura not to make excuses for her frailties, but in fact Amanda was making her own excuses. She wanted to better her children's lives to better her own. And this is my theory! |
