Midnight Oil – Beds Are Burning Lyrics 16 years ago
I had no idea that the story of Australia's aboriginals is so similar to Canada's aboriginals. I'm not familiar with the nature of the land dispute in Australia, but for those who don't know, this is kinda how it went down in Canada: The white man came from Europe to Canada where the aboriginals lived a very different way of life. The aboriginals lived off the land while the Europeans divided it up and industrialized it. We, the Europeans, built towns and cities and sold them booze. Now we are left with a huge chunk of the aboriginal population living with addiction and below the poverty line. There are a few tribes and chiefs fighting for compensation and for land. These are definitely generalizations.

I have a few issues with the whole thing... Our government throws money at the aboriginals which tends to perpetuate the stereotype. I'm not a racist or prejudiced person, but I worked in a bank in the core area of my city, and it was hard to ignore the scores of aboriginals who would come with with their welfare cheques reeking of booze. I believe we need to help each other out. But to argue over land at this point doesn't make any sense. All the original settlers and the aboriginals directly faced with this new change have passed on by now. I had no choice but to be born where I was. Does this mean I have any less right than my aboriginal counterparts just because I'm white? This is the way it is now, so instead of "giving land back", we should work together to use the land according to everyone's interests.

And to the comment about "this is a music site, not a place for politics": that is such an absurd comment. Music is used for, among very many reasons, to express concern for the state of our world and raise awareness.

Matthew Good Band – Prime Time Deliverance Lyrics 16 years ago
"One way trip"

How strikingly simple and clever.

I just love his voice when he sings "your head light, morning glow", it's so young and characteristic of his sound.

This song isn't the one that sticks it to me in the heart... Change of Season demands of me to take those few minutes and reflect

Matthew Good – A Single Explosion Lyrics 17 years ago
This hits home for me. I relate finding that loved one by flashlight, and being hard to be around, and my boyfriend kneeling beside my bed with tears streaming down my face and him forcing a smile as though to say "it's going to be okay"

Matthew Good – 99% of Us Is Failure Lyrics 17 years ago
"I know that it's bad that it's the kind they can't operate on"

Usually that refers to some sort of brain tumor, but I also relate it to mental illness; if he's talking about himself, he's saying that he knows that it is bad that there isn't a tangible "fix" to the problem.

But almost all of the lines make it sound like the experience you have when a loved one is in the hospital.

Maroon 5 – Wake Up Call Lyrics 17 years ago
I disliked Maroon 5 until this video came on one day and I've been captivated ever since. I really appreciate them as a band. Me and my daddy love them! LOL

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Suck My Kiss Lyrics 17 years ago
I dig the song, but the lust is a little off-putting. I'm pretty sure he doesn't want her to suck his kiss, so to say that that's all her mouth is for is very demeaning. Musically, however, it is terrific.

Maroon 5 – She Will Be Loved Lyrics 17 years ago
Reasons why this song might be about a prostitute:

1. "She had some trouble with herself"
Low self esteem.

2. "...your corner"

3. "...broken smile"

4. "...begs me, catch her every time she falls"

I think that when you have a low self esteem, you don't think you deserve the kind of love the persona is singing about.

I don't think that "[driving] miles and miles" has anything to do with him using her as a prostitute, just him going out of his way to care for her because he loves her so much.

Priestess – Talk To Her Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about me. I was in a relationship for over three years, and the last year of that relationship consisted of me waiting around while he had doubts about me. We broke up, but he still thinks I'm waiting around for him. I'm going to have to send him these lyrics one day.

I agree that this is from the perspective of a guy watching this relationship.

Matthew Good – Avalanche Lyrics 18 years ago
"One foot in front of the other"

"Avalanche, start inside of me"

These two lyrics and the menacing progression of the musical part of this song always struck me as meaning "mental illness" long before Matthew went public with his issues.. I have a mental illness so maybe that is why I picked that meaning out of the song.

Matthew Good – Champions of Nothing Lyrics 18 years ago
I played the intro backward...

The indecipherable garble between "I hate you" and "Love is a strong word" is actually the man and woman both saying "Love is a strong word" in reverse. You should try it, it's cool.

Matthew Good – Born Losers Lyrics 18 years ago
"Well there ain't nothing to this but your daughter"

I read an interview with Matthew Good in the Winnipeg Free Press and it mentioned something about an unborn (miscarried) daughter.
