FYI - This was written by Gary Valentine, Blondie's Original Bass Player. I think he was talking about Debbie, but i'm not sure, just my feeling - wink!

Blondie – Atomic Lyrics 16 years ago
Well - you guys are all completely wrong! And i'm sure Deborah Harry would clear this up. It has nothing to do with sex you idiots. Atomic - in the 1970's, when i was listening to this album 1979 exactly, there was a general fear of nuclear war with Russia. Atomic - and a constance reference to 'Your Hair Is Beautiful" - and then saying "Atomic" - Is simply poetic - Radiation, will eliminate your 'beautiful hair" - She repeats over and over "beautiful hair" and Atomic -- it's pretty clear. If you watch the video blondie made for this song - it's a post nuclear holocaust scene - there's a clip of a nuclear bomb going off, there's a night club with Blondie appear and the writing underneath is all in Russian. - It's kinda like a Mad Max scenario - get it? There's even Radiation warning signs in the club in the video. Geez - blowjobs! You idiots!

The Clash – Spanish Bombs Lyrics 16 years ago
It Pisses me off that there are so many ERRORS in this thread!

First the spanish - everyone here has lots of errors, no one has been 100% correct yet. I'm from Argentina so i'm absolutely clear on this.

Spanish bombs, yo te quiero infinito, yo te recuerdo, oh mi corazon. There's no question on the translation.

"spanish bombs, i love you infinitely, I remember you, oh my heart" That's the proper translation.

And from the context of the song, and knowing the culture of the Spanish - these lines are referring to cry from a fighter, the cry of love for his country - like the dying words of a fighter, fighting for his country.

He's romanticizing the Spanish Civil War, he refers to Poets in the trenches, the sentiment of fighting for your country, especially for the spanish, back then was very romanticized.

Next error --- it's Ventana, not Vendana - and it means window - 'leave the ventanna open'.

Also someone says DC-10 is a U.S. Govt Plane... um it's pretty clear that Joe Strummer is flying on a DC-10, which is a modern plane, out of context of the Spanish Civil War - he literally means the plane he's flying in.. not a US governtment plan - geez!

As for the general meaning of the song - I think that Quonset has the best answer - it's a series of impressions - as a song writer myself, that's pretty clear to me.

And all the history book references are all accurate that i've read - because people are copying them from books.
