I think this is the best song on the album!

I don't necessarily think that the cancer line is to be taken literally.

Perhaps he is smoking, but I think that it is really just a metaphor for doing something that you know is bad for you.

Elliott Smith – A Distorted Reality Is Now a Necessity to Be Free (7'' version) Lyrics 18 years ago
To Laura325, I'm almost positive that he's making a reference to 1984.

In the book, "Big Brother" is really just the government, or the conforming of the people to the government.

In other words, he is feeling that he has always been chained, so to speak, by conformity. He now finds a way to break away from it and is directly stating that it can't hold him back any longer.

Katievanish, I agree with you on some of what you're saying.

Obviously, the girl has made up her mind and is set on leaving, which is why he asks her "Are you not the slightest bit confused?" in the first line. He can't comprehend how she can be so certain about her decision when he is obviously still stuck on her, i.e. "It's too soon."

As for the "I can't dance..." line, I think he's just using that as a metaphor as a way to say that he can't do the things that should make him happy unless he's going about them in a rather miserable manner.

Hm. Putting the lyric discrepancies aside, does anyone have an idea about what this song might be about?

Socratic – Alexandria As Our Lens Lyrics 18 years ago
It's very literal, just scratching the surface of what people will do to fit in.
