Siekertr21, If you are basing your entire outlook of Christ's divinity upon your interpretation of Mark 12 (also Deuteronomy 6:4), I hate to inform you but your interpretation is incorrect. The Hebrew in Deuteronomy 6:4 uses the word ECHAD which is most basically translated as "one." However, in the context of the rest of the Book of Deuteronomy the argument is not that God is one person or that there is only one God, the argument is that God is CONSISTENT.

Also "Son of Man" is a term found in Daniel 7

"In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed."

God alone is the one who can have an everlasting dominion.

Jesus claims this title "Son of Man" for himself, as you've said.

Jesus is CLEARLY accepting and demanding the recognition of his divinity.

Christians are not polytheists. We worship the ONE TRUE GOD who came in the form of Jesus Christ to redeem us.

As Cities Burn – Into the Sea Lyrics 16 years ago
"this is a reference to Luke 17:2, which says "It would be best for that person to be thrown into the sea with a large stone hung around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to lose his faith."

I thought this at first listen as well but in the Matthew 21 verse Jesus says directly "Go, throw yourself into the sea" so it fits better.

I also love the "accidental?" reference to Thus From My Lips...
"I've got a growing heap of crosses and burdens I've simply lost heart to shoulder"

"Underneath it (the cross/burdens) nobody's back is straight"

I wish I understood the meaning that Cody had in mind when he wrote this song but it is a great song regardless.

As Cities Burn – Of Want And Misery: The Nothing That Kills Lyrics 17 years ago
Knowing the rest of As Cities Burn's lyrical meanings, and knowing Cody in general, I would definitely say that this song is talking about loving others. (i.e. the Great Commandment)

(by the way, I think all of their songs relate to this in one way or another...think about it...)

I think Viva Emily has it closer than anyone else. (except for the last part about love and romance)

Kyleee:

The man talking at the beginning is quoting the Bible in Matthew 5:30. Probably in the King James Version.

He says: "And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell."

It kind of cuts off after the "...should perish" but I am certain that's what it says. You can clearly hear it if you listen with headphones.

As Cities Burn – The Hoard Lyrics 17 years ago
"I let go of Your hand somewhere in between love and what it demands of me."

with this lyric I am reminded by another:

"love so amazing, so divine; demands my soul, my life, my all."

This lyric (and song) is talking about the great commandment: love God and love others. That is the most important thing anyone can do.

Cody expresses the true difficulty of unconditional, unmerited love and how hard it actually is. It is a plea for help.

'Grace, make your way to the well."

I never thought of it that way. The "Righteous" are those that are in need of grace the most because in actuality they fall short just the same.

"they don't need it..."

the irony and sadness of the statement is that many Christians do not think they need God. They think they have their lives all together and feel they are worthy to pass judgment.

Just in case you are one of these people, I have something I'd like to say: "love, jealous one, LOVE.

As Cities Burn – Terrible! How Terrible For The Great City! Lyrics 18 years ago
I could definitely see of how it could be a Christian's struggle with pornography. I almost can't see it in any other way anymore. "I just feel as empty as the lungs of those waiting in the womb." Wow. if that doesn't communicate regret, I don't know of any way better.

I really do love Cody's direct references to Scripture.
"Teacher which of us will be the greatest?"
"Surely, you will not die, eat and you will be like God"

i'm sure there are more but i'm blanking out.

I asked Cody (vocals/guitar) about this a while back and he told me that it was about a friend of theirs that really liked their music and hung out with them alot but got online and started talking real bad about them because they don't have breakdowns and stuff and how they aren't the typical hardcore band. The irony is that the "Are you the man now, that you got what you wanted?" is referring to the closest thing to a breakdown that As Cities Burn has that is currently playing. Cody said that this song was one of the hardest to explain.
