this song to me is the warning to stay away from love. the girl is at the lighthouse warning you of the way love destroys hearts and hope with the loss of it. when the girl pulled the singer out of the "water" it is the love she was and doing so while she was young she naive to the devastation she was swimming towards. the ghosts lover is a sailor who left her, never to come back. maybe he did not really ljust go sailing, he may just promised to come back, but they were not together, but he never came back, breaking her heart. she now sings to get people off the course of happiness because she is more bitter, or afraid. she has locked the door because she is also too afraid to go out and love again. |

this song has really, really strong references to sinninng and finding the hope and strength in repentence. "So we tell some lies and then we hide from light So we tell some lies and then we hide from light One night I fell asleep I woke up on that sunny street At first I thought I couldn't But now I see. the shadows kept me hidden From the light that calls my name All the creatures stood above me Now I'm crawling towards the sun" it's a metaphorical reference to the light, being the repentence of the light of god, or even heaven because you have been in sin, or in the 'shadows' for so long that the light you are used to is in no magnitude near what can truly be. now you see, you see the bad you have done, you have repented. and now you can on your way to be completely sin free, "crawling towards the sun". the sun being the ulitmate light. |
