Santigold – Shove It Lyrics 17 years ago
"No, i think she's talking to her white audience -- after all, she's a hipster rapper -- and saying that she and her thugs gotta live gangsta just to get by.

"So if you know another way you can't look the other way" saying that her white audience is concerned for Santogold and the hoodlums she is hanging out with

"if you know another way, tell them so right to their face." If you know another (better) way for us to live, tell us straight-up. But you won't cuz you're white and scared shitless of us. And plus there is no other way, obviously.

Then she tells her white audience that she and her crew think they're "a joke" and that their hope is naive. This is echoed by spank rock's "you counting poor folks on the train with your hands out".

Basically, I don't really think Santogold is hood at all, cuz this is as coldly and esthetically perfect executed pop-album as I have ever seen. And really everything about her makes me think she is making her material from the point of view of someone who just KNOWS what will become popular. And secondly I really doubt that thugs and gangstas take such great offense at white people who actually have HIGHER expectations for them. Maybe a little offense, but nothing worth writing home about. After all, for many people, it is just a temporary thing.

"I hear them all say
that I got heart
but not everything that it takes"
This part's really funny cuz, guess what Santi White? Looks like you've been pretty successful since like... (looks up on wikipedia)... at least 1999. And often as a producer, no less. And now your talking like you're some young upstart, because everyone knows that young upstarts MADE hip-hop. (im not sayin that young upstarts actually CREATED hip-hop (likely they did, but maybe they didn't); im saying everyone KNOWS young upstarts made hip-hop)

(Reading further through the wikipedia article) And when Santogold complains about how critics are labeling her as hip-hop & R&B just because she's black, she has a very good point (fuck you, racist critics!), but at the same time, she is half rapping in this song and she's utilizing hip-hop cliches regularly in her lyrics so stupid hack critics just writing to make a living, without a clue about music, are liable to get confused.

All that said it's a good beat but I perfer Say Aha... but I may have a weakness for upbeat, summery tunes"

Le Tigre – They Want Us To Make A Symphony Out Of The Sound Of Women Swallowing Their Own Tongues Lyrics 17 years ago
I think you're all wrong. "What are young women pushing up against? they would seem to have a whole list of options to choose from; a set of ways to construct their own identity..." there's no need to answer the question, cuz the question answers itself. Its so obviously misogynist -- the idea that women need a list of things to choose from to construct their own identity -- that no further comment is necessary.

Except one more thing it isn't just insulting to think that women need a list, the whole idea of constructing your identity in such a way is totally twisted. If you subscribe to it, than you have to accept that you are not a free agent, that you're just a sort of consumer, consuming one of these available "counter-culture" identities.

But the thing is this guy and many of you are so infected by the ideology of this culture that he cannot imagine that feminists are anything but content. And even if he understands that they aren't he still can't figure out y.

Its almost like I went to a free speech demonstration in some oppressed country and was like, "Come on y'all, you can be so many things, a veritable smorgasbord of options, from lazy complacency, to dismal complacency, even cynical complacency!"

M.I.A. – Galang Lyrics 17 years ago
"I just wanted to put down all the advice everyone had said to me about how to survive in London." is what M.I.A. said. that makes way a lot of sense in terms of

"]they say
rivers gonna run though
work is gonna save you
pray and you will pull through
suck a dick'll help you
don't let em get to you
if he's got 1 you get 2
backstab your crew
sell it i could sell you"

Each line is just another bougie fucker tellin' thinking they know better than M.I.A. how to make it big, or some well meaning fool giving weak advice.

The Go! Team – Hold Yr Terror Close Lyrics 17 years ago
Wait, did anyone else realize that langdon intentionally edited the lyrics of this song to make them extra cool, and submitted them for this page (the current lyrics at the top of the page). Then, about a year later, he posted the actual lyrics (in 1 of his comments). WE SHOULD DO THIS FOR ALL SONGS HERE ON SONGmEANINGS.NET! It'll be awesome, trust me.

The Go! Team – Hold Yr Terror Close Lyrics 17 years ago
like tropical iceland says "seeing you comb all your hair" is probably right, because it makes sense. But i just can't stop hearing "see you with cum on your hair/ pretending you know what is there".

As to the quiet vocals, I think they sound good. I think that putting the vocals low in the mix is sorta in right now, with the black keys, crystal castles, james pants, and... that list ended up being shorter than i thought. Anyway it's definitely Go! Teams style to make the lyrics just barely discernible, this song is probably the clearest they get, really.

The Sound of Music – My Favorite Things Lyrics 17 years ago
You know why this song is played as christmas song? 2 reasons:
1st, it's mostly about how material things can cheer u up
2nd it has that bitter sweetness that's in all the good Christmas songs.
Having said that, I hate Christmas music and I love this song, so I would prefer if it wasn't played as one. Oh, wellllll...

God, I love how all the sounds in the words work so well together! especially the 1st and 3rd verses. they feel so good on my lips!
