I'm not so sure that the narrator is paranoid. I think they are not very well liked and so they always change the atmosphere of the room they are in. It sounds like the 1st and 2nd verse are about 2 different people struggling with the same thing. I think the narrator is a boss at a company and is disliked because it is his responsibility to fire people, but sometimes he just wants to escape himself/fire everyone in his life and not be judged for his unpopular responsibility |

I still haven't made sense of the entirety of this song, but I think that maybe the sidewalk represents him (the singer), and he is saying that this girl made a permanent impression on his life, even if maybe she didn't mean to, that she can't ever take back. I don't know what the second verse means, but I think the gist of it is that she is not happy with what her life has become now. The third verse is mysterious as well. It seems that they are married now and that the "brand new sidewalk" is their child. A new person whose life has not yet been influenced/marred/molded by any relationships. There are no handprints in it. The confusing part about the third verse is, what did he warn her 5 years ago? It sounds like he warned her not to remain in a relationship with him, or something to that extent, possibly because he knew it was not best for her. Still though, she defied him and now they are married. The last part there is a bit of a stretch, any clarification would be appreciated. |
