this song is really clever...and you got to at least respect a good flow. and some of the lyrics are wrong in this too, by the way. |

don't knock musical forms, everyone is entitled to what they like and how they wish to express themselves. i may not prefer emo, but i'm not gonna say it blows, because it is a form of artistic expression. peace love and happiness my friends.
anyway, these lyrics are pretty good too. again, dig deeper into what's going on inside yourself. show, don't tell. |

i think all lyrics should be like a poem.
i would say this is the best set of lyrics so far. the subject is still common, but that's okay. the lyrics are much less cliché and that's what you want...your own style. don't copy, this is good. |

i agree with tool girl, everyone tends to write about the same stuff. but that's because there are certain aspects of our lives that inspire us to express ourselves artistically. i know i am guilty of writing way too many poems about painful love experiences. you guys are young, as i have mentioned before, but i think you're on the right track. once again i'd say try to show in the lyrics and music, not tell. see if you can go through and revamp your songs away from too many clichés. |

i think it's great that you strayed from traditional puppy love-sick stuff. a good artist and lyricist has variety. i would try to make this more vivid with the anger you feel towards your dad, don't be afraid to really get into it. show with images what you're trying to get across as opposed to telling what is happening. |

once again the lyrics are good and simple, speaking of plain situations everyone experiences. i think you guys are on the right track, you're still young and yet your lyrics are at the level of older bands that SHOULD be getting into more mature, poetic, intricate lyrics. (meaning you're at the mainstream level at a young age, which is where you should be...unlike the older bands who probably won't get any better). keep experimenting and trying to dig deep to find that poetry and you guys will most likely evolve into a very good band as you get older. |

the lyrics are straightforward and simple, which is fine because it's a subject very close to home with a lot of people. i'd try to stay away from too many clichés, although that can be near impossible sometimes...you just wanna say what you wanna say, cliché or not. |

i definitely did not read like the last 80% of the comments because they were all about "fuck you up the ass" and "you suck." can't we all just get along? people are entitled to their own opinons and ideas. chill out everyone, not all people have the same tastes in music or the same standards for musicians. granted, it bothers me when someone trashes a musician i love, and i might argue with that person...however i am not going to trash that person back.
and for the record i am a huge nirvana fan, and i think what they did for the music world is amazing. cobain is far from a guitar great, but he's still a music great because of the far reaching effects nirvana had on the music world. |

I think perhaps this is about a girlfriend or something, or maybe a best friend...at least how I see it. It's about meeting someone who suddenly makes your life clear and meaningful. There was a fog over his life and mind, and now finally someone has come along to make him realize it and start to enjoy life more. Simple enough, I think. |

I think it's pretty obvious what this is about. He is speaking to someone, perhaps a significant other or just a friend, who has lied to them. The person was caught in the lie by hesitating, catching a breath, pausing in word. That one word didn't fly past him like the rest of the lies, he saw through it. He's obviously upset because he had no idea this person had been lying to him and now all of a sudden things have changed.
That's pretty much the jist of it. |

shfalco--ok i'll comment! i like your ideas of it being about slavery, they're interesting and original, but personally i think that's reaching. i don't have any creative or clever ideas on WHY i don't think it's about slavery. i just think it's reaching and that it really doesn't make much sense. that's all i have to say, sorry i don't really have anything intelligent or interesting to say! |

nappyaris, you're right about leaving the song alone...sometimes. it's good to just listen to a song and enjoy it without necessarily dissecting every lyric so you know exactly what it means. and i don't think there's any way anyone can know exactly what a song is or isn't about, because we didn't write it. for instance, in high school when kids have to read stuff like the great gatsby or the catcher and the rye, they overanalyze it to come up with all these hidden metaphores and meanings that the author probably in actuality did not originally set out to accomplish. so overy-analyzing can take away from the beauty of any work of art...be it a song, a dance piece, a painting, whatever. but i still believe it is good to be able to derive your own meanings from them. let them speak to you. that's what the artists want. they don't want us all to agree on one specific meaning. they have their own ideas and meanings, and they want us to get whatever we can out of it. and this website is for people to share what they feel the song means to them and to see what it may mean to other people. that's the whole point of this site. |

it's not really pronounced "jamaica"...but with the r's in it. you know like with an accent sort of (you know how some accents add r's at the end of vowels and stuff)...like "jer-maker." that's what i've heard anyway! |

good jam bands still exist!!!! anyone heard of umphrey's magee? i love phish. i agree with Phishhead420. wholeheartedly. it is my personal opinion that there is so much sellout CRAP on the radio. even that so called emo stuff isn't all that great. it's written to pander to shallow tastes and people that HAVE to have the newest cd's...moneymakers. however, i dare not trash them, because everyone has their right to their opinions. if you think britney spears is an awesome singer, good for you. if you think michelle branch plays an awesome guitar...that's nice, but i'd suggest you listen to a guitarist like trey anastasio or stevie ray vaughn. you might learn something about talent. if you wanna learn something about writing good lyrics and melodies and harmonies, i'd suggest dispatch or dave mattews or phish or grateful dead or whoever! i'm not trying to trash on other people's music tastes, i'm just giving some suggestions that i think would make the entire world a better place! chill out and smoke a bowl for the RIGHT reasons. listen to good music for the RIGHT reasons.
oh and i think farmhouse may be about a safe place. or about trying new things and living life to it's fullest with no regrets. appreciating beautiful things like the northern lights and summer nights with flies and bright stars. take a look around you and enjoy it! |

i kind of think this song is about missing someone...to get personal i will say that i had to be 1000 miles away from my boyfriend the entire summer. and this song always made me think of him...because it's like we're in love and we kinda have a promise to each other to be true and...i'm his and he's mine. so i have my loneliness of being away from him, and the memory of his eyes and lips always with me, in my pocket. that's how i feel. it's like a constant reminder that i still have him. i may be lonely, but at least i have his lips and the two coins of his eyes along with...and no one else's. and he's got mine. does it make sense? because of that interpretation for me, this is one of my favorite songs. it's been getting me through the summer, that's for sure! |

i really think the song could be about jesus, because of the "when i get back" line. also, a figment of the higher man's tongue could be the word of god, god being the higher man. but of course it could mean that this man's supposed criminal record is just made up by the higher man...big government, society, however you wanna interpret it. it may be about jesus, it may not be. maybe dispatch wrote it with one intention and it evolved into something else. either way, there are plenty of meanings to derive from their songs. it's whether or not you are deep enough to let the lyrics reach you and to appreciate dispatch's musicality and excellent lyricism. |

i thought all that martha's vineyard stuff was interesting because i had no idea that existed...and it makes sense that dispatch got their ideas from it. not to use it literally of course. when you steal beauty, or clutch onto something precious, it can be ruined, or become "rusty." and the girl with the beautiful hair can represent beauty or love. the fleeting moments that haunt our memories. love that got away, missed chances, things that make up the beauty and preciousness of life. the wind in the willows interpretation is great...and i think it's really appropriate for our generation. it gives the song a mystical, nostalgic aura. i absolutely love this song and it makes me kind of sad. it's bittersweet. |

i think it has a lot of meanings...but one thing that gets me is that the girl put a spell on him and he was finally able to break out of it in the end. perhaps she was screwing up his path in life and when he stopped to look at the simpler things in life, the stuff people take for granted, he realized what had happened (this epiphany is the message in the bottle). for some reason i think the old guy is the guy's own inner wisdom speaking. anyway dispatch is a pretty great band. |
