> I'm applauded, then forgotten > It was summer, now it's autumn To me, these two verses echo the topic of mature artists (the song is from 2001, and see also "The Last Day of Summer" from the Cure's 1999 "Bloodflowers" album). This is strengthened even more by the video, showing this rather stereotypical new-new-wave/garage/Strokesey band. They're saying "Hey, we might just send these guys on stage so that we would be considered another band in the pack. Too bad that we actually invented the whole thing in '79!". The fact that an actual band (as Ellie points out) chose to name itself "The Killers" after this video makes it even scarier!!! I also think there is a Sumner/summer pun lurking just beneath the text :-) I'm applauded, then forgotten I was sumNer, now I'm autumn |

I am particularly endeared by the verses: When you think the night has seen your mind That inside you're twisted and unkind Let me stand to show that you are blind All of us intellectual/romantic posers just have to believe that we are, oh so twisted and unkind, and our soul is always made of shadows (and which VU fan can honestly deny to have an intellectual/romantic poser side?) But when someone really loves us she sees us for what we are: the darkness doesn't come from a haunted soul but from a blind sight (and sometimes is also projected by an inflated ego). We are so desperately trying not to be the regular guys that we actually are, and that we should be happy and proud to be! |

A wireframe rendering of how eternity begins. A Mandala made with McDonald's hamburgers bread crumbs. The face of God perfectly reproduced using recycled plastic. |

This song lyrics are inspired by a poem (actually, it's like a Robert Smith commentary on the poem): "Remember" by Christina Georgina Rossetti See, e.g., http://www.englishverse.com/poems/remember So, the "she" that the lyrics mention is the poetess. What the poem says is what the song says as well: when one is about to die and knows to leave beloved one behind, the last wish is not to bind her/him with painful memory: either it's a happy memory, or oblivion is preferable. Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad. So, bewitched2982 got the spirit exactly right :-) |
