| The Mountain Goats – Matthew 25:21 Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Having recently had two people I was extremely close to pass away, when I heard this song I broke down crying because it is just heartbreakingly honest and describes the pain and uncertainty and suddenness of death so perfectly. Even when you see death coming it feels like a car wreck, a trainwreck, a plane crash. It tears you apart. I didn't think it was possible to explain that feeling of such deep pain and sadness, and yet John does it so simply and eloquently here. This is the most gut-wrenchingly beautiful 5 minutes and 50 seconds of song I have ever heard. | |
| Bon Iver & St. Vincent – Rosyln Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Shale is, actually, a word; it's a type of rock. But I believe you are more correct that it is "share, scream your worry for what you won't ever find." I also think it's "Down, sit around, folds in the gown," and at the very end it's "We'll" not "Will" This is such an amazing song. It makes me feel sick that many Twilight fans don't appreciate this soundtrack. What beautiful, beautiful music. Justin did it again. |

| Brand New – O Holy Night Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This is so gut-wrenchingly beautiful it hurts. This is meant to be dark. The way he sings "A thrill of hope the weary soul rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn./Fall on your knees, oh hear the angel voices" with such disdain beautifully illustrates the juxtaposition of the holiday season. An event that, in the past, gave "weary souls" a reason to "rejoice" is now a time when many people get depressed and lonely. Christmas is supposed to be a happy occasion, but for some, it can be the most devastating time of year. | |
| Brand New – Accident Prone (Jawbreaker cover) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Oh, god, this made me cry. What an amazing cover. Jesse, how do you manage to continuously break my heart? What is it? | |
| Lisa Mitchell – Valium Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I want this played for the first dance at my wedding. Such a heartbreakingly beautiful song about the softness, safety, and comfort of love. | |
| The Mountain Goats – Sarcofago Live Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| WOW. This made my heart pause. What a way to start the EP. Just.. absolutely amazing. This entire set is breathtaking. One of the most coherent, beautiful, awe inspiring things I have heard in years. Darnielle does not disappoint. | |
| Martha Wainwright – I Will Internalize Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The first two verses of this song make my heart physically ache every time I listen to them. This is obviously about love. It's about knowing that all the previous pain and suffering and heartache and devastation that has amounted to this person, to this moment, has been entirely worth it. | |
| Morrissey – Angel, Angel, Down We Go Together Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
"Too late now! She's listened to "Asleep" and slashed her wrists!" That is the hardest I have laughed in a very, very long time. Thank you. This is an amazing song. |
|
| Buddy Holly – Dearest Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This is such a sweet song in such a melancholy way. It's about a love that was driven away, but it wasn't necessarily anything he did wrong, she was just fed up. He's pleading with her to come back because he misses her and is willing to change whatever it was she was unhappy with, even if he's not quite sure what it was. | |
| Placebo – Evalia Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| God this song is so beautiful. The guitar/synth/whatever that starts at 1.53 is just gut wrenching. | |
| Lindsay Lohan – Confessions Of A Broken Heart Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I honestly cannot stand Lindsay Lohan but I think the music video for this song is absolutely incredible. | |
| Damien Rice – Cold Water Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I was also at the concert that Bluestars mentioned, and the time that Damien spent explaining this song was the most profound moment I have witnessed in my entire life. The house went completely dark, the only light coming from 9 candles he had distributed across the stage. You couldn't see anything, all you heard was his voice and he said how this song was about wanting to die. Moments like when you're in the bath and you sink your whole head underwater, determined to drown. But when you start running out of air you start to panic, and right when you would like to go up for air there is a hand on your head that just pushes you down deeper. And you start struggling and flailing and are just thinking "oh God, please, please. This is it. this can't be it." And even if you have never ever prayed before in your life, this is when you start. And right when you're sure you're about to die if you can't get up and get that breath of air, the hand lets go and you slowly emerge from the water, and you realize the hand was your own. And at this point everyone in the audience was struck stone silent and Damien starts playing and the entire theater stays pitch black until he broke into the last (loud) chorus of chanting, at which point the stage spotlights come on for a brief second, facing the audience, and you have just enough time to look around and realize that every single fucking person in the entire audience is crying, then it goes dark again and you can literally feel your soul falling apart. My heart ached for weeks after that show. |

| Ani DiFranco – Lost Woman Song Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
"she offered her hand for me to hold she offered stability and calm and i was crushing her palm through the pinch pull wincing my smile unconvincing on that sterile battlefield that sees only casualties never heroes my heart hit absolute zero" That, for me, is the most painful part of the song. It makes my gut wrench because I have been in that position and the way she describes it is.... exact. The way she brings it down to an almost-whisper and separates it from the rest of the song just makes it radiate heartbreak. Those few lines mean everything to me. |

| The Weakerthans – Hospital Vespers Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This turns my stomach in knots. I don't know why but it's such a powerful haunting image, especially (like riserise said) the last line. This song just leaves me feeling nauseatingly bleak. It hurts in the most wonderful way. | |
| Moby – When It's Cold I'd Like to Die Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I take this as waiting for something, or someone. It's as if she has been waiting for so long for someone/thing to come along that would renew her hope and faith in life. She's just been searching endlessly for something to hold on to, and even when she thought she had found it, it wasn't there when she needed it most so she's just letting everything go because it doesn't seem worth it to hold on anymore. God this song is painful. It really is just... haunting. It makes my whole body ache. |
|
| The Frames – What Happens When The Heart Just Stops Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| the way he says "into disappointment, I'm disappointed" is just heartbreaking. One of the most amazing songs i've ever seen performed live. like 'say yes' said, it's just so... comforting and easy to feel. | |
| The Frames – Star Star ** Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
smaid said it. it's about holding on, doing what you feel is right, and pulling through regardless of what happens to you on your journey from Point A to Point B. makes me cry every time. |

| Margot & the Nuclear So and So's – A Light On A Hill Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Correction: "You can own the STAGE but the lights and glares will not make you real." This is a song about a musician's life on the road and the relationship with his family back home. He cheated on his wife while on tour "just said the first three words that popped into my head" then immediately regretted it and wished he could take it back, realizing that he has essentially abandoned his family. The wife knows that he's been cheating on her one the road and she's mad at him because he has kids but he's not willing to tell them what's really going on. "my woman is cold, our children are stoned and worthless. They're all waiting for you to tell them the truth, the truth is a line that you'll never use." When he first met his wife she was drawn to him as an icon, she just saw the glamor of the stage and the rich privileged image associated with rock stars, but that's not really how their lives are. "Her dignity shown so brightly like a light on a hill, and she burned for me and no other man came near her flame. Bad country songs, the deafening twang of the rich white kid blues. You can own the stage but the lights and glares will not make you real." At the end his wife is giving up, she realizes that she was wrong about how she thought life being married to a musician would be and that she can't deal with the relationship. She admits she isn't meant for that lifestyle and she leaves him. "She whispers to me I was meant to be free, this life that we built is deadly. She crawls from my bed, runs a comb cross her head. She crawls to the train and drives herself home." |

heartbreak. completely, totally, violently, utterly heartbroken. |
|
| Brand New – Okay I Believe You, but My Tommy Gun Don't Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I'm too lazy to read all of the comments on this because from what I've seen on the first two pages it's primarily all petty bickering. But if no one has corrected it yet, the line "We fit to the truth, we are the best at what we do" it's actually "we ADMIT to the truth, we are the best at what we do." | |
| Brand New – Sowing Season (Yeah) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
As many has already mentioned, this references both Kipling and Eliot's poems and I think the way Jesse has incorporated not only their words but also their rhythm into this song is absolutely phenomenal. If I had to pick one loud song as a "favorite" from all of BN's music, this would be it. Every time I hear this it just breaks my heart. When I saw them live I passed out from screaming along so hard to this song. The live footage of it gives me chills. Amazing amazing amazing. |
