| Such a hugely emotional song to his ex-lover Lisa Hannigan in my opinion. I'd say accidental babies from his 9 album is probably related. He obviously feels a whirlwind of emotions still - self deprecating, apologetic and rejected. | |

| I think this song is about feeling powerless to loosing someone. To me the protagonist knows what he should be doing but he doesn't. Its not clear if its due to a low self esteem on behalf of the protagonist or an underlying apathy in the relationship. It's also one of the most beautifully sad pieces of music and really conveys the hopelessness of the situation. Fantastic song! | |

Seems this song is about people ignoring consequences and doing as they please then reasoning behind religion. "God only knows" is used twice. On one occasion he suggests doing what you like and if you can reason it with god your ok: Well god only knows One long vacation If reason is priceless There's no reason to pay for it Then another occasion he is feigning a pious sense of right and wrong: God only knows So mind your behavior Follow prescriptions Of your loaded savior Reminding you to reason your behavior according to your chosen faith. Then he suggests possible reasoning for doing what you like: Every temple needs gold Every hook needs to shine The "smooth sailing" is just used as a depiction of no one getting in the way of what you wana do and ignore the fear and disregard getting caught "I'm in flagrante In every way, every day". For my money this song seems government directed |

| The song to me is explaining a utopian place where people can go to feel safe and secure. A place thats between dreams and reality (but unlike either). This is a place where the more vulnerable in society - like old folks - little babies - women & children can go, but he isn't sure where to find it - but knows what it should be like... or something | |
